Gas goes bad fairly quickly; does oil? Opened or unopened make a difference?

Thanks!

I would say "no" on oil for the most part. Gasoline evaporates and that makes a big difference.

The big thing about today's oils is, they are about half additives and detergents. While the oil part itself might not go bad, I don't know if the extras have a shelf life.

Pat, I'd agree that, within reason, shelf life for oil is very long. But instead of our speculation, why don't you take the initiative, contact a couple of the major oil refiners and get their comments and share with the rest of us.

The additives can undergo degradation, but slowly. Use it on your lawn mowers.

Actually it does appear to have a shelf life. here is an interesting post on the subject:http://www.machinerylubrication.com/Read/172/lubricant-storage-life

Given current liability risks, you have to ask how conservative the answers really are.... It wouldn't surprise me if doubling the times given would be acceptable in practice....
