I got my hood blankey from the packardclub.org
packardparts.org/parts.htm It's a fiberglass type one, which is different than the 55-56 ones. Mine doesn't have a wire screen on it though. -Tobs

There is a very original and low mileage 54 Cavalier near me here in NJ. It has the yellowish fiberglass mat but I can't say I've seen or can even see suggestions of what might have been a wire screen mesh.

Bobby,
Here is my unrestored and original blanket w/54,000 mi. I just looked to see which Packard club is selling the insulation blanket for the 51-54 cars and of course cannot find it.

The mesh effect you see is a quilted pattern on the mat. Some small animal at some point had gotten some nest insulation.

The blankets are not a Packard Club project but are being sold by Dwight Heinmuller who has adopted the name "packardparts.org". packardparts.org/parts.htm

I do not know about the 51-54 pads, but my 55 Patrician had a Fiberglas pad. The blueprint from the Studebaker National Museum says fiberglass for 463232 for 55th series. Do not know about 56 pad.

I used three layers of a lined bubble insulation from Lowe's for my 1955 Clipper's hood pad. It replaced a fiberglass one that was in terrible condition. I painted the exposed surface black, so as not to be too obvious. Initially, I used a 3M spray-on adhesive, but this did not hold, and was replaced with their trim adhesive. The trim adhesive is working well, so far. Personally, I like the look. It is not authentic, but ...

You guys are really great, thanks so much!
There's this guy who's been selling 'Authentic repro hood pads with correct seams' in black vinyl for the '51-56 Packard and I just knew it wasn't so. I ordered the pad from Mr. Heinmuller after seeing the pic of it and confirming it's "original looking". I've been searching for this part forever (as in about 18 years!), and am thrilled to finally have it. It's those details, you know...
