Rear Stabiliser Rubber Bushing Replacement

Gents,

I seek your learned assistance once again. I removed the rear axle housing from my 56 400 over the weekend as I am getting ready to take it in for a rebuild. When I turned my attention to the rear stabiliser bars, it was evident that the rubber bushings are buggered. The bushes in the eyes at the outer ends are a simple replacement, however I seek advice as to whether the bushes that are held within the mounting bracket where the bars are anchored above the diff are servicable and if so how? See attahed photo.

Warren

If you slide off the bushings from the center post, you will see that one of the two flat plates is welded to the center post and one is not. You can remove that plate by neatly grinding off the swaged portions of the outer pins on that side. With a bit of wiggling and tapping that plate will come off and you can replace the rubber bushings. There are kits available from the usual suspects.

With the help of two or three clamps or visegrips you can squeeze the thing back together. To hold it together you can drill and tap the outer pins for button-head cap screws to replace the factory swaging. Remember clearance with the mounting brackets on the car is limited. I prefer to put 3 equally spaced tack welds on each pin, cooling the assembly immediately after each tack so the rubber is not damaged.

For best service, look into using shock absorber bushings in urethane which you can find at an off-road specialist. The diameters will be OK as these are standardized items, but you might have to grind down the thickness to get the assembly to squeeze back together.

Thanks for the prompt and sound advice Ross - the voice of experience... I'll take your advice on the polyeurathene bushes. Likewise my preference will be for the tack welds. I'll let you know how I go... Warren

Good luck--and be sure to mark the ends of the sway bars. There are so many interesting and confusing ways to put it together wrong.

I just spent last weekend changing the sway bushings and shocks in my '54 (wow, what an improvement!..that's another story, though), let me add that I used the bushings from Kanter and to my eye, they look like urethane...they're not rubber...and they fit perfectly. I'd highly recommend you go with them rather than sourcing them with the 'Hope and pray' method.

Last time I spoke with Dan Kanter about the sway bar and shock bushings (very recently), they were rubber. But with Kanter's connection to PST I asked Dan if he could provide crossover numbers to PST's urethane parts especially for the 55/56 rear sway bar bushings. Perhaps they've made a source change? I'll see Dan again this weekend at the regional PAC picnic and will follow up on this; my rear sway bar bushings on the 56 are usually pretty well beat up after a couple of seasons of driving.

When I redid the 56 rear sway bar, I ground off the pin heads, and drilled and tapped for cap screws. This sure makes it easy to replace the bushings, especially when they need replacing so regularly - very glad I didn't tack-weld them. I did however get the two bars back in incorrectly which Ross noticed and corrected when he had the car for Ultramatic service.

Thanks guys - all good advice. I'ts great to hear everyones different approach to this issue. If these bushes do chop out with some regularity as suggested here, then maybe tapping the pins to accept cap screws or replacing with bolts as per hank's method may be the way to fly. I'll let you know how I go...

Somewhere in the first 60 pages id say. If I have time at work tomorrow I'll try to find the exact page. Don't feel like it right now, rough day.
