38 110 idle speed

We're messing around with a 38 110 and the idle speed is way to slow but when you drive it or give gas it's strong and smooth. How do set the idle speed higher?

Why do you say it is too slow? Normally you want the engine at idle to be as slow as possible-enough to keep it running and no die when coming to a stop.

Dear PackO:

There is a screw on the carburetor throttle stop. Packard specified low idle speeds but there is no harm in setting it higher. In fact those low speeds are only good for new parts and a higher idle speed will provide more splash for the pistons.

Can you be more specific as to where exactly the screw is located? Maybe picture or two?

Thanks. When you're on the passenger side of the car is it on that side?

Here is what is happening with the engine. When you can get it started it runs not slow and smooth but slow and rough. Almost like it isn't getting enough fuel. When pushing gas pedal down there is a noticeable delay before engine responds and many times the engine dies like it isn't getting fuel. But when it doesn't die it has smooth power when giving it gas. We're thinking about getting the carb and fuel pump rebuilt. I wish I knew how to do that myself. Is that something that can be done with specific instructions? I'm not clueless with engines but haven't done this before. I've done much work to our everyday cars with instruction to save money on labor.

The carb is a Carter WA-1 and the fuel pump is pictured.

We drained all the gas from the tank and it was orange and brownish-(10 gal!!). There wasn't any dirt or trash but it was obviously old gas. The tank is in good shape. I was thinking of seeing if the carb and fuel pump need rebuilt. After getting those items fixed re-installing those, put new gas in and see how she runs then.

I think I'm going to remove the carb and fuel pump and have someone rebuild them assuming they need that. Is it fairly simple to remove these two items?
