my rebuilt starter seems to have an issue with the bendix drive. Note the position of the drive, it will not return much further to the rear. Before I send back I am considering taking it apart to inspect, comments please.

Your starter probably has the anti kickout bendixhttp://www.packardinfo.com/xoops/html/downloads/SC/SC-VOL26NO9.pdf and the pin is preventing things from returning.

I don't remember hearing of a procedure but perhaps Jason or someone else can explain how to return the gear to the home position without the flywheel being able to spin the bendix so centrifugal force can release the pin.

Just install it and start the car as usual.

It's easier to install with it in the retracted position, but usually isn't a problem engaged as yours is either. The best way to get it to dis-engage is to run it in the over-running (ratcheting) direction on a wire wheel. Once your engines starts it will over run the drive and the speed of the starter and the drive will dis-engage all by itself. The guys above were correct in saying install it, you'll be fine, I just thought I'd give a little detail in how it works.

HH56, you guys are amazing. I just came in from the shop with the same issue. I bought a 54 Cavelier and the starter was in the trunk with a rebuild tag on it.

I was fooling around with it and moved the start gear out to ma ke sure there was no binding and it stuck out. I was sure I did some kind of rookie move until I read your post.
