In the process of putting all my family's Packard new car sales into a spreadsheet, I've come across some Serial and Engine Numbers that have letters at the end. I am wondering what their meanings are. Even after searching on www.packardinfo.com and other sites on the internet, I was not able to find an answer.

If anyone can point me to a source that will provide this information, I would be very appreciative. Following are the Serial and Engine Numbers in question:
Serial Numbers--
2462-32235A
5477-2697C

Engine Numbers--
G292695CE
G293016CE
G294320CE
G292936CE
G5145CE
G5220C
H411376F
L303430H
M310287H

Thanks in advance! Paul

Suffix letters can mean different things in different years so first you should identify the series or year by the prefix letter of the motor number. Here's a few suffix codes that come up regularly, you'll find most of them noted in either the Service Letters or the Shop Manuals:

21st series All models, "A" or "B" = alternate source clutch plates & cover

22nd series Eight, Super 8 "A" = oversized valve guides
All models "C" = later type pistons and rings
Eight, Super 8 "D" = larger capacity oil pan (7 qt.)
Eight, Super 8 "E" = late style camshaft, lg. oil pan, early pistons/rings
Eight, Super 8 "CD" = late pistons/rings, large oil pan
Eight, Super 8 "CE" = late pistons/rings, cam, large oil pan

23rd Series Super Eight "F" = hydraulic lifters

1951-54 288, 327 "H" = hydraulic lifter option (standard in some 327)
(Service replacement engines all had hydraulics)

Thanks folks for the quick responses!

The info Owen_Dyneto provided explains all the engine number suffixes except the six cylinder "CE" -- engine number G5145CE (car serial number 2282-9-2708). Any idea about this one? Did the six cylinder engine have a cam and oil pan change also?

Also, any idea on the letters mean at the end of these serial numbers:
2462-32235A
5477-2697C

Thanks!!

Wasn't there a discussion some years back on extra letters appearing in numbers. I seem to recall it had something to do with a change to a car already in production where the car had started down the line but for some reason it was redirected to another buyer or had some major change and had to be modified before it was completed and left the assembly line. Weren't those instances denoted by a letter in one of the numbers and if it happened more than once they changed to the next letter? Anyone remember this discussion and the details or am I just hallucinating again?

HH56, your recollection is correct but to my knowledge that only applies to 1955-56 model year cars.
