Hi All,

I am chasing a pair of original side mirrors for the '56 Patrician. If you could point me in the right direction or have a pair let me know please.

Thanks

For side mirrors you had 2 options back in the day, plain mirrors or spotlights with built in mirrors.

I drive my 400 without wing mirrors. Just not really necessary in a hardtop, but probably would be useful in a sedan.

Pics below of a different 55 400 with dual spotlights added by the dealer.

A popular option is to use wing mirrors that simply clip onto the outside trim.

Reproductions are available through Max Merritt but would probably need a second mortgage to buy. That said, I just bought a nice used one from them to go with the other nice used one I already have and to get the mounting bracket as a sample as mine is missing the bracket. There are cheapie knockoffs on eBay and other sites that look nice from a distance and I have a pair but would definitely not recommend them.

Out of curiosity I called Max Merritt and it's $1000 for one pair of repro mirrors.

If I were you I would look at clamp on mirrors. Also consider if you even need a pair. It used to be that cars only came with a mirror on the driver side (left), not the passenger. (We sit on the left and drive on the right, Australia is the opposite in both as I understand.) So the equivalent there would be to have a mirror only on the right side, not the left. Unless you are planning on a significant amount of highway driving.

Cheaper mirrors:

Actually, back in the day even the driver side mirror was optional.

This is the 1955-1956 type mirror which looks very much like the 1951-1954 type but it mounts differently. The 1951-1954 type mounted to the belt molding while the 1955-1956 type mounted to the door itself or, optionally if desired, to the fender. Left and right for all was the same.

Note that steel bracket under it which, shown here, is on upside down. The bracket screwed to the door (or fender), then the mirror attached to it.

I know. Hence why many of our cars have neither.

My perspective from driving my LHD '41 120 Club Coupe in a RHD drive country, Australia, is that a RH mirror is mandatory and a LH mirror is optional but a nice device to have. Of course the rear visibility out of my Coupe was more limited than you'll have with a Patrician.
