Exhaust routing 50 sedan

In future I will have to replace my exhaust system. It will have to be made up for me. The bad one I have at the moment goes right past the fuel tank, even touching it and the leaf spring. Here is some pictures. Can someone please advise or sent photos with the correct route that the original exhaust took? Appreciate photos so I can show the exhaust guy! Thanks!

That's the same routing as on my '47. I had planned on installing a new muffler and tailpipe with a larger diameter pipe but the 1 3/4" diameter one on the car now just clears the gas tank and the spring and a larger pipe would not fit.

Your current tail pipe has only the correct very general route but obviously has been shaped incorrectly as it should touch neither the spring nor the gas tank. Tight quarters in there. Understanding the logistic and cost problems of shipping to you from the US, you might consider buying a repro tail pipe only to insure having the correct shape, and then having a local exhaust shop take it from there.

The routing of the tailpipe is incorrect. It should go over the rear stabilizer bar(fifth shock). I've just replaced my exhaust system and the repro tailpipe was two pieces which made installation easy.

Yes, just checked my 47 and the pipe goes over the 5th shock. My comment was in reference to the gas tank/spring routing arrangement.

Thanks Dallas, I looked too quickly; I knew it runs between the spring and gas tank but missed the "double hump". Looking at the parts book answers so many questions I sometimes wonder why it's not looked at first, this plate from the 48-54 parts manual shows it quite well.

Dallas, If you don't mind doing so would you measure the outside diameter of the tail pipe. The inlet pipe of my system to the muffler is quite a bit larger than the outlet side. Mine is 1 3/4" outlet which is about all the room the routing will allow.

Dave, I just went into the garage and took a look at the tailpipe on my '47 Custom Clipper. The pipe goes over the 5th shock and fits between the gas tank and rear spring and shackle, just barely. I measured it and it is 2" O.D. Did not check to see if the tailpipe fit in or over the muffler outlet. I hope this helps.

John, Thanks. The exhaust pipe on my car must be incorrect at 1 3/4". Maybe that extra 1/4" will unleash some more horsepower.
