37 115c starter

On my '37 Six, the owner's manual says that there should be a magnetic switch on top of the starter. Looking at my current starter (see picture), it looks like the negative cable goes directly to the starter, without the magnetic switch. Is that switch a common failure item and fixed like my starter?

I would think there should be a solenoid (magnetic switch) of some type, or how else would you trigger the starter on and off?

There is an external solenoid on the firewall. Not sure what it is from, yet, but it looks like a Ford piece if I remember correctly from my college days when I was four-wheeling all time.
So, it looks like I have some work to do- non-factory carb, modified starter.

Check out Cole-Herseehttp://www.colehersee.com/catalog_top/index.htm They list several 6v solenoids that will mount on the starter. You should be able to find one that works at a decent price--unless you want the original look with the knurled cap on the end. Those are available from at least one of the vendors but due to the rarity, are priced accordingly.

If it's electrically the same, then except for the knurled cap looks similar to the one on the left in picture. Max lists that for the 37 six. He also shows another as applicable for all models 35-40. Either one looks as if it will need a copper buss bar connecting the solenoid and motor terminals together. Flackmaster or one of the other 37 experts will be the authority.
