VEHICLE HISTORY/ PROJECT STATUS: | My Dad found this old Packard 116 touring car "out behind the barn" on a ranch near Boyero Colorado and drug it home back in the late 6s. The running gear was pretty complete, but the back half of the touring had been cut off and replaced with a flat bed (Beverly Hillbillies style). It was used as a farm truck until it was parked, probably in the 5's. The radiator and hood are missing. We parked it in the old garage and pulled the engine. Besides being stuck, the engine had 3 broken main bearing caps (center and either side). There was some rain water in the bottom of the pan, but that was good as the remaining oil was u around the crankshaft journals and prevented any rust on the crankshaft. I assume it was knocking badly due to the broken main bearing caps and that is why it was parked. The steering gear had been removed and installed on a piece of home built farm equipment (hay loader I think), but the old rancher located it years later and gave it to my Dad, short the pitman arm. Dad bored and sleeved the block, but the broken main bearing caps caused the project to stall for years. Dad died in 22 and the old Packard still sits in the spot where it was parked back in the 6's. In honor of my Dad, I am going to attempt to get it running and leave it as an old farm truck. It won't be pretty, but it will be great for a parade. | ||||
