VEHICLE HISTORY/ PROJECT STATUS: | I purchased this 1939 Packard Super Eight Touring Sedan (VIN # 1272-279) off Ebay from Francis J. Zak, 1414 Russell Rd. Westfield, MA 185 on May 1, 214. When I purchased the car, it did not run and had not been operated on the public roads since 1966. The car was shipped from Massachusetts to South Carolina for restoration and modernization. Mr. Zak purchased the Packard from Mr. John Malloy, who also sold the car to Mr. Zak with only a bill of sale. I contacted Mr. Malloy to obtain a more detailed history on the car. Mr. Malloy obtained the car from a gentleman living in Westfield, MA. That gentleman also bought the car with a bill of sale and no title many years ago. The gentleman from Westfield had the car in long-term storage for many years. The car had not been titled or operated on the public roads since 1966. The building in which the car was stored in Westfield burned, damaging the Packard. When Mr. Malloy bought the car, it had survived the fire in the building in which it had been stored. When Mr. Malloy purchased the car, the paint had been burnt off the front end and to of the car and the headlights and windows had cracked. Mr. Malloy told me he had the car for about six months before selling it to Mr. Zak. He had repainted the front end and roof and replaced the headlights and some of the cracked glass by that time, but decided the car was too much for him to deal with. He then sold the car to Mr. Zak in 213.
Vehicle Modifications
MODIFICATIONS: | Super eight sedan obtained from seller on Ebay. Car had survived a fire in the storage building in which it was stored. Originally came with twin sidemounts,, truck rack, which were missing when I got the car. Engine would not turn over, wiring harness was shot. After giving it serious consideration, a full restoration was not considered feasible, so I decided to upgrade the running gear while leaving everything else as stock as possible. Car now has a GM 350 V-8, 700R automatic transmission, power disc brakes front/rear drum braking system, AC. Exterior and interior will be restored to stock look.
