VEHICLE HISTORY/ PROJECT STATUS: | Delivered new in Australia (with RHD) by the Packard importer in Melbourne - Kellow Falkiner (Rolls Royce and Bentley dealers). Apparently assembled from CKD kit. Fitted with locally made AWA Pushbutton radio and Smiths heater. Largely original, except for paint colour which was originally yellow with white roof. Restored and repainted dark blue in 1980s. Another mechanical overhaul about 10 years ago. Converted to electric wipers with local Preslite motor etc. - most likely fitted when oil pump was upgraded. One of the last cars manufactured by Packard in the US, and one of about 12 imported to Australia in 1956 including three Clippers. Don't know of any others still running here. One was converted to a picku then cannibalised for parts (some of which I have). The other is still in Victoria but not running. Have now discovered that the engine number was not originally assigned by Packard. It was stamped after it arrived in Australia to satisfy the registration authorities. Sorry Owen-Dyneto! Mechanical overhaul in 198s, including engine with upgraded oil pump, valve seals etc, recored radiator. Quite original. Planning light cosmetic restoration. Perhaps for wife to drive!
Vehicle Modifications
MODIFICATIONS: | Stainless steel twin exhaust system. Repainted dark blue (a Ford Australia colour, but very similar to Packard dark blue). Edelbrock 4-barrel carburettor with manifold to suit. Wire wheels with Ford centres (to fit Junior stud pattern). Modern Bluetooth radio fitted in glove compartment (original AWA AM radio still in dash). Modified oil pump and electric wipers. Manual control for Torsion Level, for negotiating steep driveways etc (and entertaining bystanders at traffic lights).
