VEHICLE HISTORY/ PROJECT STATUS: | The history following is currently unsubstantiated but believed to be correct. Originally used as a Hire Car in Melbourne Australia. During WW2, US Army requisitioned car & driver, back seat removed and used on military mail run between Melbourne(South) to Darwin(North)2 to 3 miles each way accompanied by an MP at all times! Over mostly unmade dirt roads when there were roads, and dry creek beds, railroad tracks, etc when there were not! Doing this every 2 weeks. Engine replaced in Darwin with '37 engine after original blew. Gears in transmission were "knife edge" with wear when replaced during restoration. Body had no rust in 1987 except fuel tank bottom which was rusted through and replaced by bottom of Chrysler Valiant tank! I plan to drive the car, not daily, but at every suitable opportunity. Member of the Packard Automobile Club of Australia &am the Antique and Classic Motor Club Inc. My history with the car. Bought May '07 for AU$24K, sold July '09 at auction for AU$23K which after commission and charges left AU$2K net. Did about 5, miles in the 2 years I had it including a 35 mile round tri to Canberra Oct '07 after which the head gasket was replaced, water pum rebuilt and the aftermarket tem gauge replaced. Another tri this time to Crookwell in Nov'08, a 25mile round tri running well all the way. Only other thing replaced was the clutch rod which snapped, welded u by the previous owner. Pity I had to sell the '38 but I never really envisaged owning two Packards! | ||||
