VEHICLE HISTORY/
PROJECT STATUS:
pMy uncle John found the carat Sinno Auto Wreckers in Pittsburg, CA in about 197, substantially complete, but needing total restoration. No records were available, and title had been surrendered. The identification plate shows that it was sold by W.E.Baker in Roseville, CA, and is dated March 1939. He re-registered it with Calif DMV on a "salvaged" title using the current engine number (not original), and did a cosmetic restoration during the 197's. Since he was a proferrional auto and painter, this focused on , paint, chrome and interior. Little was done on the mechanical or electrical until I bought the car from him when he moved into a convalescent home in about 199. It was his desire to kee
it in the family. He had always wanted to restore a late 3's packard straight eight, and this was his dream car! It basically just sat in his garage at his Santa Cruz Mountain cabin. Had their been any surviving records, he would have given them to me. Uncle John restored the exterior with a heavy black vinyl top, closely simulating leather. The car bears a small chrome custom plate below and behind the side mount, which says "Bohman and Schwartz, Pasadena". Uncle John was aware that the engine had been replaced with a larger one at some time in the past. The block has the date 12 7 48 in the casting in front of the starter. With hel
from members of this forum, we conclude that this must have been a Service Replacement engine, probably installed in California. Uncle John and I always assumed that the car had spent its entire lifetime in California. Soon after obtaining the car, I rebuilt the brakes, replaced king-pins, rebuilt the rear lateral stabilizer shock absorber, adjusted valves and replaced points, and flushed all fluids and replaced shock oil, gear oil, etc. Later I replaced the transmission gears, which were chipped u
badly, with a good used set from another 3 speed parts tranny. I made various repairs to the electrical, lights, and electric overdrive circuits, to get everything operating safely. The car is now a good highway cruizer, and with the OD she likes to run smoothly at 65 miles per!! A joy to drive!
Vehicle Modifications
MODIFICATIONS:
As stated above, at some time the original 282 engine was replaced with what appears to be a 288 Service Engine. The usual rear quarter windows are not present, and a heavy black vinyl top has been installed. The rest is essentially like the original, I presume.
