Welcome to Packard info, Bill. Being a relatively recent retiree myself, I got a kick out of your 'as if I do not have anything else to do'. Retirement most certainly does not mean inactivity, does it?!?!? I'm busier now than I've ever been, but I too, also managed to 'fit' a vintage car in there and have had a lot of fun, and learned a great deal along the way. Best of luck on your 'new' project. I think you'll find Packard Info an exemplary source of good folks, ample info and assistance. Chris

Re: Shutter thermostat help

Hi Richard,
That sure LOOKS like the same thermostat as on my '39. My manual says to adjust the threaded rod until all the slack is taken up, then 1 1/4 turns more to 'preload' the springed shutter assembly. This works on mine and it completely opens and closes. My guess is either your T-stat is not 'throwing' completely, or possibly the linkage that connects your shutter assembly has been forced and is bent, such that it is not completing the open/close cycle completely. If the linkage was ever seized or jammed and the T-stat imposed it's considerable force on it, there could be some bent metal in there somewhere. Chris

What has me puzzled is the LUXURY part of the name. Was there such a car in the 120B line in 1936? The doors are suicide types which I don't see on other 120 sedans so something is different.

Hi Daren, Congratulations on the 'near-purchase' of your 'new' Packard; looks like a fine car. Re your questions, it may be possible the seller is 'inserting' the word 'Luxury' into the description to bolster the status and appeal of the car and, as far as the suicide doors, I believe they are standard issue for the year and model.

No worries, John - I just always worry about someone taking it the wrong way and the whole thing descending into the classic 'war of words' and there's definitely nothing to be gained there. Thanks for your reply. Chris

In re-reading JWL's wording, it's possible we're both saying the same thing. If that's the case, sorry for the miscommunication! Chris

Pipe fitting threads are tapered and provide the seal for those types of fittings.JWL

Hey, JWL - not sure if that is what you meant to say, but, as a point of clarification, tapered pipe threads are about the only fitting-mating configuration that DOES benefit from pipe dope or sealing tape, as the tapered thread sealing on itself is prone to leakage. Most other threads that are washer-seal or machined face seal like JIC or flare, etc., are not assisted with pipe dope or Teflon tape. Chris

That would be QUITE the auction to attend! Some 180+ vehicles in the pictures to my count and many of them at least semi-exotic. Hard to imagine accumulating that many cars over a lifetime; not sure at what point it goes from 'collecting' to hoarding, but it would be nearly impossible to maintain or manage a fleet like that. For all intents and purposes, they would just sit there and go to rack and ruin; somewhat sad, really. Now maybe selling them off at auction, some of them can get new owners and fresh starts and head back towards restoration and usefulness. Chris.

Hi JCH,

I'm sure those who know a lot more than I do will weigh in here, but I removed the steering box on my '39 and the gear does not come off the steering wheel rod - it is integral and must go with the steering box to wherever it is going to be rebuilt. I too thought mine should come off, but was quickly tuned in by the pros on here, that it does not. I am guessing your unit would be the same?????..... Chris
