Re: Transmission fluid leak

There may be something to this after all, it has now been about 8 hours since I drove her and all I can see is one faint drop of transmission fluid on the floor drip pan. I checked the level before I shut off the engine and the fluid was still in the lower quadrant of safe.

I know that I have a very minor leak at the front engine seal and you see a drop or two of motor oil under the radiator. The rear seal was mentioned as was blowing back but one should see some drips below where the engine and transmission attach, right? The only drip location is several feet behind and on the passenger side of the transmission where the tapering section begins but well before where the drive shaft exits and it is Trick Shift for sure. I will have her up on the lift again this week for a minor brake leak. She drives and shifts so nicely I really don't want to mess with too much but need to know. I really do not remember exactly when the leak was noticed but it was not immediately after the pan was dropped. The trans is cast iron and if you remember we had so many leaks at one time it was hard to figure out what was what, now that everything is fixed or manageable I started noticing the extra fluid in the floor tray when she was driven several times a week, so far I have logged several thousand miles with only one trailer me back home papa.

After my 55 Pat sits for a couple of weeks I spray some electronic tuner cleaner in the top of the distribution cap and wipe it out, it dries instantly, cleaning the end of the rotor always helps also, she starts on the second try. I know we don't usually like to talk about foreign cars but my 1968 MGB would never start in the winter and being too lazy to take off the air cleaner I got a plastic squeeze bottle with a long neck from the science lab and drilled two holes in the air cleaner, stuck in the pipe and gave it a couple of shots of gas and covered them with black tape. It would usually start, unfortunately the car never caught on fire.

Without question, how may times has HH56 been on the point with his illustrative pictures and fixes when my subject line reads "Help Help".

Regarding the transmission fluid, as only one 1/2 quart is ever in the drip tray and the stick shows fluid in the middle, could the stick be incorrect and the fluid an overflow? Just for fun I cleaned the drip tray and took her out for a drive without topping the transmission fluid (the temp here in Florida is bitterly cold in the 60's) so I tried out the front and rear heaters for a change. I will let you know tomorrow if any fluid is in the pan. I am most likely incorrect but what the hell. Thanks

Transmission fluid leak

My 55 Patrician with a twin Ultramatic now runs like a Swiss watch when she is so inclined or traveling down one. Opened up the pan a few months ago to fix the reverse stop pin after she turned into lawn ornament and ever since I have noticed little by little more and more transmission fluid on the floor pan up to about 1/2 a quart per week. It is not coming from the bottom plate that I removed. I had her on the lift a couple of times and cannot get a grip on the problem. I am using Trick Shifter with a little Lucas and have not rebuilt the transmission. I am not losing any engine oil. The drips are coming from the rear portion of the transmission casing just before it starts the taper towards the back and yes the dipstick is on the passenger side. HH-56 mentioned in an earlier post that twins have a breather on the back, could it be coming from there?

Funny you posted this..I was just talking to my dad about the dealership close to my home in Bonita Springs, FL. I have never been inside but it looks like a good weekend time killer.

Great car in there just waiting to get out, you found the right place for advice. Nice to hear that you also like "factory" cars without the modern upgrades.

May you always be able to fix her on the lift before she gets into traffic.

Finally had time to put her up on the lift. Drained out the transmission fluid, now dark and dirty (maybe flushing out all the Lucas oil I put in) but you could see more shavings, put in trick shifter original this time and will drive a bit this weekend. The shifting patterns have changed again. Before the drain would only shift into second in High drive, after the change would only shift in Low drive. Either range the shift into second is often hard. The transmission now glides into reverse and with the new rearview mirror and see where I'm going. Plan to drive a bit and drain the fluid again as the flushes seem to help. Maybe she needs an antibiotic.

Finally finished with the gear selector with the necessary part supplied by Green Dragon. (Thanks) When I opened the box it was not what I expected, everyone's recollections were different as no spec drawings were found. What the hell so I put the part on and discovered that it has that weird wire angle was for a reason as it wraps around the outside of the column into the gear selector window. Thought those who have followed this opera would like to see the pictures of how it fits.

HH I will check it out when I can get back on the lift. The bracket seemed just to be loose and everything tucked back together ok. Maybe it is just those metal shavings or something like you said is bent. Another side track, had to remove a section of the front grill, discovered that the chrome plating guy just spray painted them chrome with Krylon and covered it with a coat of lacquer. Trouble is he did a great job on the back, always thought those front pieces just under the headlights looked funny and a little dab of chrome polish told me why...it's just shiny paint..
