Agree with HH, this is indeed an astonishing difference.

I shuddered at you earlier pictures. Well done.

Hi cli55er, did you end up with the right heater plenum?

What options are out there for a good replacement of the heater plenum for 56?

My original cardboard one is not very useable.

Cheers

G'day all,

From the info above..."Dexron, Type F and B&M Trickshift fluids seem to be compatible with the Ultramatic, but what works best depends on your particular situation. If you're not having any problems try Dexron. If not satisfied, do a COMPLETE drain and refill with Type F. Still not satisfied, try Trickshift. Beyond that, it's probably time for repair or rebuild."

I just finished a rebuild, it seems from the summary above that any of the mentioned do just fine. With caution - stay away from Type A

Is this still the feeling?

Cheers

G'day Dave,

It sure did get in the mesh!

For expedience, took the decision to cut the cap open, remove old mesh and find a replacement material, then braze back together.

For now the start up will happen with sock type filter.

Glad I asked the question and thank you for the reply.

Cheers

Russell James
G'day fellas,

I have been combing the V8 pages looking for a question on Oil Filters. Glad I found this one to reference my concerns.

I am just about to fire up a rebuilt engine and have been scratching my head over...
- the correct filter to buy?
- what are the right part numbers?
- how does the filter actually work?

HH helped by mentioning the 1/16 holes that should be in the central shaft - mine must be blocked severely as no amount of compressed air up the pipe revealed any outflow other than the bolt hole (and there should be no leakage there once the bolt was in place!).

I am also assuming the flow direction is in from top out the bottom onto the timing gear? Is this correct?

Also, reading about the importance of the oil filler cap in the filtration, I am concerned that having this powder coated may have been a mistake?

Your opinions and direction sought...

Russ

G'day, thank you all for your input. While in US recently I visited with Gary Osko in Corona CA and we went to the local NAPA store.

They matched the correct bearing (it is a big unit!)

Very happy with the outcome. Now back in Aus piecing the 400 back together. All going well

Cheers

Hi, thanks for the SKF number 88128R, would love to also get the Timken numbers if possible?

I gather 56 is different to 55?

Also once this info is verified, be good to get both into our X ref system.

Not sure which will be available readily in Aus, maybe will have to try the direct shipment process.

Cheers

Russell James
Hi, I have taken delivery of a Willwood setup for my 56 400. Decided Willwood because of their reputation.

Also, following the advice of many, the BTV is getting tossed and will be replaced by a power system from ABS.
Thanks for the advice on the valves.

Will keep you posted as it comes together and the driving experience once sorted.

Cheers
