Getting the right wheel bearings?

Went over to NAPA for wheel bearings and got a real jerk, which isn't hard there.

Thought I would order parts from Amazon. Attached is a picture of part of the screen. The site will not let me order these because I made the mistake of filling out the "Lets-be-sure-it-fits" boxes.

Ross advised getting 88128R bearings. Are these correct? I assume SKF is a reliable brand. Amazon also offers a number of Chines bearings for as little as about $4.00. Seemed like a good idea to stay name brand.

These are for my 56 Pat....

Am I correct in assuming the lets be sure it fits box is a farce where our cars are involved? Are the bearings in the picture suitable?

SKF is a top name in bearings. You cant go wrong with an SKF. SKF is a Swedish bearing company. Most of their Automotive bearings are made in India as are most car parts today. Far better than the China brands.

I got a set of Timken from Autozone that were a perfect fit for my pat.

Bearing in the photo is correct for 56 (and about 50 other cars going all the way back to 49 Fords) The separate ring shown in the photo is part of the set and helps retain the bearing on the axle.

Can't imagine why they should be hard to buy at NAPA. Just don't even mention the P word and order by number. Don't let the mouth-breathing troglodites have the upper hand.

This brings up another area of potential misinformation: pictures are seldom of the specific object in question on many sites. It's more a "looks like..." game. Saves bucks on images and storage I imagine....

Hi, thanks for the SKF number 88128R, would love to also get the Timken numbers if possible?

I gather 56 is different to 55?

Also once this info is verified, be good to get both into our X ref system.

Not sure which will be available readily in Aus, maybe will have to try the direct shipment process.

Cheers
Russ

Hey folks:

I used to deal with a terrific company in Pittsburgh that does person to person phone sales and mail order business:

Gipson Bearing and Supply

980 Forest Avenue, Homestead PA

412-462-7960

Ask for Chris Kringle.

If you have a number that isn't Packard specific they can get bearings to you. This is an old line company that helps people.

Hope this helps.

Totally different, 55 rear axles are Packard-built, 56 is a Dana/Spicer unit, no common parts that I'm aware of. 56 uses a permanently sealed bearing and 55s use open tapered roller bearings and seals requiring periodic repacking. Axle shafts, differential carrier, etc. all different.

G'day, thank you all for your input. While in US recently I visited with Gary Osko in Corona CA and we went to the local NAPA store.

They matched the correct bearing (it is a big unit!)

Very happy with the outcome. Now back in Aus piecing the 400 back together. All going well

Cheers
