It will be interesting for sure--not so much for his experiences but for how long it lasts. It appears he is leaving the car in some exposed areas in Southern California. Didn't see a mention of security but even if it's there, in one of the highest car theft areas in the country, wouldn't expect it will be too long before someone in a large U Haul pulls up alongside and gives it a try. Granted, it's not a more desirable Toyota or Honda but----

A related question or two.

Are there any modern sets that approximate the look of the original Packard boots? I think they had a sort of ribbed look. Lots of 135 degree sets but the universal ones seem to be a bit slimmer and smoother.

Also, what is the difference between a cable set for regular cars and one for Caribbeans? I didn't realize there were two sets but one is listed only for 55 and 5688's.

If everything is working properly as soon as you start the car, vacuum will pull a small ball up away from the switch a short distance and hold it there. As soon as that ball is out of the way, there is no mechanical connection between throttle shaft and switch plunger and things will stay that way until engine stops.

Good Luck! I hope yours goes smooth but-----be prepared. Root canal is a nice term.

When I bought my first 56 it had also gone thru several hands unregistered although I had a title and a bill of sale. Piece of cake right? Wrong!!

Problem was the last registered owners had signed the pink slip on the lien holder lines instead of the registered owner line. Our beloved DMV would not accept that because there was no lien listed and as far as they were concerned, registered owner had not signed it. Bill of Sale was almost worthless for registration because of the title--although I had to have that for use taxes (and that's another thing entirely).

Wound up having to send a registered letter to the address on registration. Of course, it being about 15 yrs later, both owners had the nerve to pass on in the meantime so it came back as undeliverable. Took that back to DMV, which they were not happy with but with the letter at least had found a daughter in law. Wrote her back and she was kind enough to sign a DMV form as to when and where they died. DMV accepted that but still had to post a bond for double the cars worth according to some list they had. Took months so compare it to a root canal without novacaine.

I am firmly convinced a lot of our DMV personnel do not care, know procedures or give a damn half the time. Lets all keep our fingers crossed they have gone mellow in the last 30 years and yours sails thru but one suggestion--if it takes multiple trips ALWAYS go back to the same person. I found they each seem to have their own little ways and wants.

Out of curiosity, is this the way Packard did it? I would think the soft copper rubbing or vibrating against hard steel would lead to interesting results.

Can you tell how the inside vertical upholstery support is held on? The parts manual lists 16 fasteners for a 56 but the question is whether they are spring clips or tacks into some kind of strip on the edges.

Pictures have to be smaller than 2048K and of proper format so if either was wrong, that may be why it disappeared. Another thing is if you are logged in for a time without doing anything, your session may have timed out just as you posted. Sometimes it will give a message and you can quickly copy to save text but usually you start over. Several of us have had that happen.

Sounds like several of you are in the Portland area. I have a good friend who's working on his 52 club sedan also in Woodland.

Without knowing your exact setup it is kind of hard to offer suggestions. If all you have is a toggle switch, then going to 5.35 is a lot of drop unless the solenoid is jamming and really pulling current. It kind of makes the switch suspect. If you run a heavy wire directly from battery to solenoid do you still get the drop?

There are repro 12v solenoids that fit the later units but not knowing what you have, they may not have the proper energized length for your unit & are still a bit pricy. It might be worth looking at though as it would eliminate the need for a second battery from the sound of it.

Not too sure on that one--it's been too long since I messed with a sedan. The parts book just calls them fasteners but I seem to remember something almost like a tack going into a fairly dense nailing material -- but that might have been the windlace. Maybe you could start at the bottom with a stiff putty knife type implement & move it along to pry off a few inches until you hit one & get an idea. Down low, at least any misques would be out of sight if you had to repair something.

Don't know for sure, but I think the 54 might probably be similar enough so maybe Kev has enough of his apart to tell.

Not the same type the long molding is held with. As you see, there is no flange for a clip to go behind. They have a stud welded on (you can barely see the discoloration just towards center of peaks at top & bottom where they came off). I can't remember if they were the smooth type that press into a permanent receiver in the body or a speed clip or if they are threaded. Parts book calls out clip so am thinking press on speed clip & not threaded. You will probably have to pull the center post upholstery loose anyway to see & remove.
