There are as many answers as there are Packard people out there. Myself, I like them all and wish I owned at least one of each. My wallet says no but my eyes say yes.
I'm a "Keep it Stock" guy. To me seeing an old beauty chopped to pieces and running a engine other than the original is a crime. I like original interiors and paint jobs.
The grandkids and myself have other fun with them. We hand built a 7 foot gorilla for the back seat that has a remote fart machine in him and have a ball at car meets. His name is Black Jack the Garage Gorilla and wears a top hat, spats, and other goodies. This month we have him dressed up as a pimp, and we are now making him a shall we say partner.
Its all a love of labor. Unless your a mechanic, things will break and need attention, but thats part of the fun. My oldest grandson is becoming a pretty good mechanic and it gets me away from the TV and him off the computer.
Buy the best you can and get your hands dirty just like the rest of us. The people here have helped me keep mine running and are a great group.
Good Luck and keep us informed of your choice.

WAAAAHOOO HAPPY DANCE SHES FIXED and wow do I feel stupid.
When I bought the car it came from Ohio - the former owner didn't have the auto choke hooked up and to start in cold weather he had carb mixture extremely rich.
After installing tube from exhaust manifold to choke, I had to lean it out. Then as summer came on the engine wouldn't restart when warn - until I leaned it out more. As the summer heat went up - it was overheating so I had the block and radiator flushed. Thats when it seemed to slow down to 35 MPH.
I checked the carb - plenty of fuel at idel and looked fine when I blipped the throttle.
While laying in bed one night thinking about it. One thing kept coming to mind - on 3 or 4 occasions I had leaned the mixture. DUH too much.
Next morning I started her up, let it warm up and held the throttle wide open - sure enough only about 800 RPMs max. I took the trusty old screw driver and opened up both mixture screws 1 full turn and VIOLA FIXED....
She does 60 now and I'm still kicking myself.

BigKev - Who turned it into a race?
Your spending more time on the key board than with your Packard. Slow down and smell the flowers. Before ya know it your hair will fall out or turn grey like ours did.
Get your baby ready for a spring cruise - its warming up nice and the leaves are starting to pop out on the trees.

WOW
A cool Flame paint job, a pair of Fuzzy Dice hanging off the rear view mirror, and some Air jumper shocks and it would be a great Low Rider here in San Fernando. I almost forgot the little bobble head dog in the back window.

I had to replace a broken valve spring last summer. It ran hot as the weather climbed, but had more power than ever at high RPMS. While taking it to the radiator shop for a flush job it overheated on the way there. I pulled over let it cool down and drove straight there. Thats when the problem started. I did not drive it hot. As soon as the gage went up I stoped.
I've checked plugs (new) - wires - carb - points - condenser - coil (looks)new - New Optima battery - new flex fan - compression is good - timing as close as I can get it without scope - electric fuel pump with gage steady at 4 to 4.5 pounds pressure. I did have to free up the heat riser, it was rusted in the closed position. I'm out of ideas. I'll check for play in distributor in morning - there is no tag on it.
Thanks guys

Does anyone know where to look to see if I have an Autolite IGP Distributor in my 1940 120?
I'm considering installing a Petronix Electronic Ignition.
I have spent the entire winter checking out and tinkering but the engine still stumbles at high RPMs. I can get it up to 35 MPH but then it starts to crap out. No mechanics in my area, and I'm at my wits end.

I had the same problem about 3 days ago. I had to request new passwords and user info 3 times before it cleared. Running like a Packard now.
I thought you didn't love me anymore
