i went to the gas station today filled up the car drove it 55 mph for about 15 miles. I was noticing a slight bit of missing at high speeds and if i go up a very long hill. The fuel pump was rebuilt but when I got home the fuel filter seemed to hardly have any fuel in it. Tomorrow im going to check fuel pump pressure again. Also when i shut the engine off It pushed out about 2 quarts of water. I quickly grabbed my temp gun and checked the engine temp it was 202 f. I have the right inner front fender out but maybe it would cool better with it in. Also the fuel tank was cleaned and coated by a guy i used may times. and the fuel line was replaced front to back but the fuel filter is getting slightly discolored hopefully that will go away after a while. Dose anyone have any other suggestions.

Just wondering if your fuel pump has the factory heat shield if the fuel gets to hot maybe its vapor locking

Had the car out for a short ride it seems to be running good knock wood. I put a nos muffler on a while ago called a silencer and the car runs so quite that when i come to a stop sign i think it stalled. Did these cars run that quite with the factory muffler?

Using the tool to check the valve stem length I found that the valve stem was to long i ground that down so it had the correct clearance and no more valve tap warm. I hope it never returns. Also ran it about 20 miles. Hopefully it’s coming back to life it seems the more I drive it the better it runs. Maybe things are freeing up from the long dormant state.

It could be a head gasket or a crack somewhere you may want to send the head to a local machine shop that does engine work and make sure the head is not cracked.

When you put air in the tank check for leaks in the metal fuel line it could be rusted. Also a while ago I bought a 52 packard and the stone filter in front of the carb was so clogged up no fuel at all would go through it.

there is various RPM calculators on the internet that will tell you your speed and rpms. Just add your rear ratio tire size and overdrive ratio it will tell you how fast. Some of them are easier to use than others.

1941 160 valve tapping again
|

I dont know if everyone reads the blogs so I wanted to ask this question. I finished a few things on the car this weekend and decided to take it for a ride. It started missing under a load and when I got home I noticed 1 of the valves was tapping again. Its the 4th valve from the back of the engine. I know that is 1 of the valve lifters I replaced before. I guess I have to remove the head and replace that lifter again. Does anyone have any other Ideas?

I tried a few things this morning i checked that the oil filter canister had a 5/64 orifice it did. I deleted the oil filter so that all the oil pressure went to the lifters first. I tried to put a slightly heavier oil in it. none of those things worked. The oil pressure is about 30 psi hot maybe slightly higher. Its the 4th valve from rear. The noise is not there when the engine is cold. The only thing I can think of is remove the head and replace that lifter. I checked the low oil pressure article in the service letter and since its only 1 lifter I dont think that is it. but who knows. keep the suggestions coming.
