To be honest I don't know. It is luck of the draw. A year ago I bought for beer money a different version as part of a small collection of ex-library stock, sorted out and formerly belonging to the Polytechnic Institute of Kiev.

Speaking of fleets of ZIS's, for years I chase after an excessively optimistic advertising film that reports on the production process of Stalin Motor Works. According to the output figures its daily production should have exceeded rarely more than one car per day. But in those days especially the luxury cars in Moscow were gregarious and followed the herd instinct.

Mal, much better! The very one.

Please find below a pic of a Packard in Tampere, Finland. Its windows look tinted.

The Cadillac pictured had the later flat head V-16 engine, not as pretty as the 1930-'36 version, but ran better.

John, let's go for a spin.

It's really hard to tell, but it does look like some sort of shielding in the 'down' position. I just wonder how it interacts with the actual window? Does the actual window roll down? do they just manually lift and fasten the shields ...

Dave, I have an answer for at least one of these questions. As one of the next pics will prove, the glass windows roll down.
Today a photograph of President Truman and the Packard with the unidentified shields.

A story, written in Russian, reports on a man who lives in Leningrad (today Saint Petersburg). He bought his Packard Six in the 1950s and until today he and his car weather all storms. They just go on forever, all revolutions and counterrevolution aside.

Guscha
Is it the triviality of my question or is it the wonderful car that makes you silent?
However, it doubtless shows all signs to be a worthy carforce number one - resp. number two since the above shown additional plated Packard hasn't been equipped with handholds, extra footboards, sirens et cetera, perhaps a wolf in sheep's clothing.

Guscha
Dave (clipper47), thank you for putting it in words I should have used.

Dave (JD), while searching for a manual I found an offer for a starter, at least similar to yours. The asked price of $495.95 would made me as reluctant as you to work with hammer and crowbar. No harm meant!
The suggestions from Howard and Jason (startergenrebuilder) doubtless are steps in the right direction for a durable solution instead of treating the symptoms by emergency stop switches and physical force.

Starting from a well tempered hammer blow as a less-than-ideal but temporarily helpful solution, rapidly developing to becoming a habit and doing this on a regular basis and culminating in an easy way to damage Packards - within a few hours.
The group dynamic effects of the 1970s would probably have led to a self-incrimination as hammer murderer. Forty years later we succesful refined that process of getting noncommittal to I wouldn't seriously take a hammer to anything under the hood.
