Roger, thanks, good point. BTW have you restored your car by own hands?
And when the talk is of CCCP cars, then it shouldn't be forgotten to use correct lenses. Otherwise the ZIS police would deduct points for not being "political correct".

It's been interesting, starting out with a couple of newspaper articles on remaining pieces of Packard corporate real estate and ending up with the price of extracting crude oil.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind - I've taken enough posts of others off-track.

Dave, I am not as innocent as a newborn babe but in satisfaction of the hijacked thread I would like to show a way to return to Packard in the New York Times.

The original ZIS part number is 308096-П.

Today all shapes and sizes of the sealed-beam system are available in Russia. To get the finest quality money can buy check Kanter Auto Products.

Kevin, does it needs an electric cable to illuminate the nuclear fusion?

(Charles) Packard used a fast breeder reactor to reach transwarp speed. The below shown pic proves on how the teleportation truck breaks through the so-called SOL-8 barrier on the way to Fukushima.

This thread is to answer a PM, related to the ZIS headlights.

Sealed beam in Russian is "Лампа-фара", a system* that consists of the reflector, the glass lens array on the front and the bulb, taken together to one unit. In the event of damage it has to be completely replaced.

Howard (HH56) provided a suitable pic, see item 4.13025.

*Acc. to wikipedia: "...introduced in the United States in 1940 and became mandatory from the following year until the 1984 model year..."

Before focusing on the above shown and doubtless wonderful Packards I would like to shoot a glance at the 1938 Cadillac V-16.

"...Two of these huge convertible sedans for 7-8 passengers were built by Fleetwood on a special chassis of 165" wheel base, powered by the mighty sixteen-cylinder engine. They were used up to the mid-fifties as parade vehicles and security cars by the occupants of the White House and their guardians..." [acc. to cadillacdatabase.org]

Dear Lord Keepers of the Privy Seal and especially sole heirs of Packard Twelve knowledge, if possible please spare me to tell that a Cadillac is just an opera showcase for bling bling but a Packard is a car for over-modest gentlemen and so on. Perhaps not for everyone but at least for me that turbine-smooth Cadillac is one of the crowns of US-built prewar cars.

Perhaps in a different Germany than the one I live in. We don't invent special names for every single folly.

The inner core

To surround the above shown building not only by cars but additional by a certain touch of sociocultural knowledge that opens an insight into the inherent mode of Soviet decision-making processes I invite you to take a closer look at the facade of the hotel Moskva (Moscow), situated in the centre of the capital.

Click to see original Image in a new window

I'm not absolutely sure, I admit, but background stories like the following seem to be virtually predestinated for better understanding of the mechanisms involved in the Stalin era.

"...The old hotel was notable for its use of two different designs for the wings off of the central structure. The most popular explanation is that Shchusev submitted two different designs for the wings of the building, with the intention that Stalin would select one of the designs when he authorized the plans. However, he simply signed off the blueprints, likely failing to take note of the two choices. This confused the builders, and afraid to make the bold move of informing Stalin that he had failed to select a design, they simply constructed one wing of each on either side of the building. One design included large windows and a more ornate facade, while the other maintained smaller windows and the simpler details of the rest of the hotel's facade..." [BBC Russian.com]

This may be true, or if not true then at least a useful falsehood, a perfect rumor.
