J - cant tell u who came up with the term in Body Work or Uph. but it means to HIDE or ELIMINATE the Surround. If u have any contact with custom cars of the 50s u might have heard FRENCHING THE HEADLIGHTS or TAILLIGHTS which means eliminating the Bezel (sheet metal to glass). In this case of the rear window it means hiding the Frame via wrapping the top material around the frame. As far as i can piece it together production open PACKARDs started doing it in '32 thru '34; TWELVES got it on the inside as well using another panel. U see a few other manufactures doing it also as well as Custom Bodies. DIETRICH like to do it on his stuff. Up until a few weeks ago i never thought about '35 up Ph. With the one photo of a 35 conv sed. i figured they got FRENCHED and a photo of a 35 Conv Coupe i figured they did NOT. After taking a good look at the photo i have of the 35 CS im thinking its a Proto so now im having second thoughts about production CS getting FRENCHED.

Just helped an Uph. with info on a 734 so pretty sure they all had exposed window frames.

See u at PEBBLE. Taking a '39 FORMAL.

Give me a yell if any questions - BARRY 801 971 1934

Found a PRETTY MUCH UNMOLESTED 36 su8 Ph. that has had the top replaced on but it looks like the copied it stitch to stitch. The outside of the Rear Window Frame is exposed so going to assume (bad word) thats the way the Phs. came.

Thanks 32model901 but all those photos dont show me the outside of the rear window or r replacement tops so r they right. It typ for a retop to have the window frame exposted. Assume the topper dosent know it should be FRENCHED or dosent know how. Cant tell u how many 32-34 ive seen done wrong.

Being a colored photo i would guess it not to be a period photo and thus a redone top so theres no NAIL IN THE COFFIN.

Anyone have a period photo that shows how PACKARD treated the outside of the rear window on Phaetons. FRENCHED or NON??

I have a photo showing a 36 su8 ConvCp - NON
A 35 Conv Sed showing - FRENCHED

Factory recommended a sealant to the gasket. I pref. the Alum Copper gasket and i spray with Alum Paint for the sealant; if u do this make sure the can states it has ALUM as part of it makeup.

Lost Torque?
-Old thread in/on the block-studs-nuts
-Paint or filler compressing under the Washer
-SS Nuts being over torqued and thread collapsing/galling.
http://www.engineersedge.com/torque_table_sae.htm
-Old Stud stretching.
I jokingly say that by the time a engine leaves my shop it been torqed 123 time.

Sadly ive had a bad surface job in the past.
