From 4 door to 2 door, dropped the top, looks good! That's some talent. What about a rag top / convertible?

Just got my waterpump back from Arthur Gould (631) 269-0093, exactly 8 days after I mailed it, $85 plus $17 shipping for 102. Haven't installed it yet on my 52 327. My pulley diameter is 7.5 inches. Is the transmission cooler allowing coolant to flow?

The timing is interesting, didn't think it would play into the temperature of the motor.

BigKev is right, check the box on the firewall, it will give you a clue to what brand you need. Check with Kanter or Max Merritt as well. 6V positive ground.

If you do find a used one and the condition is suspect, run it to a local alternator repair shop, they usually rebuild generators as well. If you need, I have a local one you can deal with in St Paul, MN, they rebuilt mine.

Here's what mine looked like before and after (300 52 Packard w/ 327 so should be similar):

Does anyone know will a 56 ultramatic transmission oil pan fit a 52 ultramatic transmission? I know the dipstick location and length is different...

You have probably already figured this out, but your Packard is intentionally 6V Positive ground. Make sure your ground to the engine is a large, thick wire or braid, as the negative going to your starter. Shouldn't be a replacement thin cable. Also, there is a body ground that often goes bad and causes 'electron loss'.

It may have been retrofitted to 12v, look for an alternator instead of a large original generator, and of course a 12v battery. Purists like 6v, many convert to 12v for one reason or another (air conditioning, modern electronics). You can still get 6v batteries at automotive stores in rural areas.

Of course you have Max Merritt and Kanter available; if you keep posting your exact needs you'll find other resources available here. Look in the "Packard Dealers" section.

Brake parts are pretty standard and you'll find equivalents at NAPA and other auto parts stores.

Take a look at BigKev's build in the project blogs, he has over 40 pages of detail photos and notes on his 54 Packard.

Here we go again! I removed the water pump from my 327 and sent it to Arthur Gould's today, they said $85 plus shipping, 3-5 days of shop time, I should have it back relatively quickly. I'm shooting for June 18, the local date of the car show, so that is 17 days minus two weekends, 13 days, plus a couple days to mail it out there and mail it back. It'll be tight but it might work.

Hope all of you have been well over the winter. It's hard for me to get excited about the Packard when the garage is full of winter stuff. Now I have the whole thing to myself again, Packard is in at an angle.

Other projects I want to complete before the 18th is the exhaust leak between the intake and exhaust manifold, the leak at the rear pinion seal, and cleaning up the new hood that I received.

I have a 51 hood with letters "PACKARD" on it, which is technically not correct for 52. But I'm not entering any competitions, and I think it will help identify my car when someone asks what year of Chevy it is. So I think I'll run the 51 hood on my 52 Packard until I can afford a complete body off restoration.

Hope this is a stupid question - you have a positive ground, right, and the negative power cable from the battery to the starter is really thick, like a 1 or 2 AWG? (most battery cables are 4AWG, smaller number is a bigger wire).

Take a non-working starter to any local alternator rebuild place and ask them if they can dig into it for you, or do it yourself. This forum can help either way.

Thanks for the videos Hank! They are indeed very well done. Thanks for using a tripod, I hate shaky videos. If I had requests, how about tuning, timing, brakes...man the mind races...

The temperatures are still in the 20's and they are predicting several inches of snow tonight (Valentine's Day 2010). I'm getting pumped to get back into the garage and start getting the water pump off of the Packard, and sending it to New York to be rebuilt. I considered just buying one off of Kanter, but I still have to pull the original one and mail it in or pay 150 core charge.

Then it's time to take the right fender off again and get the intake/exhaust manifold to play well together. There's a leak between the two and I plan on putting a high temp gasket there where the two meet under the carb.

Hope all is well with the people who frequent this forum, it's been a long winter and I'm excited to get back into "Packard Rebuilding" mode.
