Re: Checking transmission fluid
Home away from home
Home away from home

Steve
Hello all,
I have a 1951 200, and a 1953 Clipper both with an auto transmission. I'm pretty handy with most of the work needing to be done.....that having been said, I hop into the car at the beginning of Spring/Summer "good weather time" and drive to WalMart with my Packard oil cartridge, my own oils, a lube oil pump filled with type A trans fluid, and get everything checked, lubed, oil filter changed, fluids checked, tires rotated (if needed) and as stated in the past about being able to find the trans dip stick....well, I find that when the workers first see me coming in I get all these wide eyed scarey eye ball bulging looks, but I've found that the workers are initially mystified but I ease them into the work and tell them what to do, how many zerks there are and at times I can hear them talking "where the hell are those other 5 fittings." All in all, they do enjoy working on our "wonder mobiles" and I've never had a bad experience. My point: I'm 68 and capable, but I have 4 old cars and I need to get them done each year and know that everything is okay after a winter slumber. I furnish all the parts and oils and I'm only charged for the lube total bill usually $25.00 to $35.00. Where else can you get 2 or 3 people to work on your car for that kind of money? I'm just saying.......

In the car owners registry I filled out the info and added a picture of my car. However the car registry showing all the pictures of the series shows a generic photo of my car. It has been that way about a year and I would like to substitute my car for the generic picture......Any Ideas?
Regards, Steve........

I have a '51 and a '53 Packard. The weather strip for your car is currently produced for, and carried by: Steele rubber, Max Marriott, Kanter, Tuscon Packard and probably others. Just look for the year and body style, there are cross sections of rubber for different years. Choose the correct year, buy it in bulk or buy it in pre- measured lengths. bulk is cheaper and eeeeaaasy to put on. Hope this helps.

I came across these cars being sold complete or parted out in the Portland Or., Craig's list.

At the risk of sounding like I'm advising you when I don't know you personally.....Well.....from my perspective and with much humility, I would like to state that the car might have been a good deal at some point, but now it's deteriorated to the point that it would take so much time, energy, and effort, (money too), to restore it that you might risk the twin evils that we might all have experienced with very large projects,........exhaustion and loss of interest...I know I have. However in the end, we all need to do "what we gotta do" and once your decision is made, you'll get more support from this forum than you can handle. Hopes this helps.

Regards......

Thank you BigKev for the link that you have set up for "Packard parts". I went to your link on ebay, saved it in my "saved searches" and threw out my own Packard parts searches. Ain't it just grand

The rubber weather strip goes on the door, and on the body around the trunk. Hope this helps.

I'm thinking that the rear transmission seal is leaking. To better help you, if you can supply a picture of the leaking area others will advise on the best action. However changing the seal is a pretty easy matter. The service manual for the 1951 to 1954 cars is available on this web site and is easily downloaded or used as an in place reference to read. Hope this helps.

JEEeezz Fred,
I've learned a lot from you..... but..... more often than not, you use your "bully pulpit" to advise, disagree, and opinionate, etc. Your information, insight, clear thought process is of value to all us, yet that's not the issue, it's how you SAY IT, not what you say. Offered with all due respect, Fred.
