Re: Car surges on freeway driving

Right on Owen!!!! Now that I think of it, when I rebuilt the carb the kit had a "new design" needle and seat that was installed with a certain stack of fiber washers under the seat. When I drove the car it couldn't get out of its own way. After messing and fussing with the carb, talking to the supplier, I put the old needle and seat back in and had to re-adjust the float. It ran fine, didn't stall in a tight turn, no hesitation on acceleration........however it was months before I took the car on the freeway and have not connected the possibility you suggest (float level) until you stated it in your post. Gawd, I love this forum..Thank you Owen. I'll keep you posted.

Regards, Steve......

preignition under those conditions.

Owen, Does this mean: Timing calls for 6 degrees.....Set instead at a number less than 6 degrees down to 0 degrees?

Hello Owen,
can you give me the name, make, model of your dwell/tach? Is it newer equip or from "back in the days"

Car surges on freeway driving
Home away from home
Home away from home

Steve
Hello again. This question is about my 1951 Packard 200. Driving performance around town is excellent. When driving on the freeway the car surges mildly, slowly, rhythmically... A slight variation up or down in throttle pressure will cure the surge. Steady throttle pressure is more likely to cause the surge but not every time, nor does uphill steady throttle pressure always create the surge. What I know: Fuel lines clear..Gas filter clean...rebuilt the fuel pump (gas pump diaphragm looked good) Timing and dwell as close as I can make it. Vacuum advance holds vacuum. I am pretty sure it's not an electric problem due to the lack of the sharp instant feeling of a miss or an electrical breakdown. Your input will help me cut back on the Scotch and soda.
Thanks again.
Steve

Dwell/Tach meters

I have multiple posts on this forum trying to keep the questions separate. My next question is: I fully understand how the dwell/tach works on a Neg ground system but because I have three Packard's I would like to find a dwell/tach that I can use on the 6V, Pos ground systems. I would like to use currently made equip that members of this forum have possibly found that work. If not, what do you recommend? I've been on ebay but the descriptions and the subsequent answers to my questions tells me that the sellers don't know if the equip will work on the Pos ground systems. Thanks again.

Setting the timing
Home away from home
Home away from home

Steve
Re: 1951 Packard 200, 288 engine. The timing calls for 5 or 6 degrees BTDC. There is vacuum to the vacuum advance. Do I disconnect the vacuum line, set the timing then re-attach the line? Or, leave it connected when setting the timing? The vacuum appears to be "ported" vacuum not manifold vacuum.
Thanks for any answer.
Regards, Steve.......

Fuel pump rebuilding
Home away from home
Home away from home

Steve
Hi BigKev, I am asking for clarification on your pictorial on "Fuel Pump Rebuilding". You mention "dressing the diaphragms" with PB Blaster......What is the purpose of dressing them? What do you do, just spray on a rag and wipe them down?? I took my pump apart and found, though basically the same as your pump it has a very frustrating way of linking the end of the pump arm to the two rods of the gas and vacuum diaphragms. There are slots in the end of the diaphragm rods which must engage two separate hooks on the end of the pump operating rod and I'm at the point of putting all the parts in a box and having it rebuilt... Do you or any one else have some tips. Pump is for a '51 Packard 200. The reassembly of the pump is an open question
for anyone to answer.

Hi Al
Could you please elaborate on the rubber grommet. I have a '51 Packard 200 and have the same problem with the small trim piece falling off......I can't visualize your solution...Does the rubber go in the hole???
