Non Packard slim Jim transmission question
Home away from home
Home away from home

Tobs
One of the guys in my local car Club has a 40 Olds with an Olds 455 V8 and a gm 375 "slim Jim" transmission. He Said The transmission was not shifting properly, and when he opened up the trans and valve body he found this Part was broken. It seems to be spring metal, and was previosly bent.
Can somebody help us to identify the name of this part? Any leads where to find a replacement would also be welcome.
Thanks and happy New Year!
Mike

Spent another 2 hrs this evening scraping away paint and paint remover. Now I am down to The original paint, but it has been 2 Applications of remover to get this far. Jeez. Think I will send them for media blasting and primer next. I've had enough.

Drivers door is bolted on. Yay! Still need to align a big better. Hood, trunklid and fenders are halfway stripped. The organic paint remover takes a while, and is much quieter than using an angle grinder.
Few photos from my phone. Some Progress on Gregors tranny, but not much. A few seals done, but the bearing in the tailshaft looked Sketchy so he wants to replace that also.

Seals for The Ultramatic came in this week, so we may do The tranny on The weekend.
When installing the torque converter to The input side of The tranny, should I feel a certain number of clicks as things engage? I remember this from doing a th350 years ago. Car will be up high on some big jack stands, and we have a motorcycle Jack that is almost as good as a real tranny Jack, but sadly has no tilt adjustment. Will not be easy, but should be possible.

Re: 1947 Radio

I got an Email from a friend of mine who recapped The Radio in his 52 200 himself with success. He got The caps from canada, so I guess from justradios. I will try and get some more Info from him about how much work it was.
Also, only the paper or electrolytic caps dry out. The mica? And ceramic caps don't need to be replaced, which might bring your count of 27 down a few. My Radio has 21 listed total, now I need to figure out which ones are paper or electrolytic.

Not yet, but I am also considering it on The radio from my 53. First step is to get a schematic that has all The caps you need listed, then you have to choose new caps that meet or exceed (but not too much) the cap and volt spec of The originals. I am tentative about taking on The task, and it might be a little nuts, but sure would be cool if it works. There are also People that restore home Radios as a hobby, so it cant be rocket Science. A friend of mine restores old pinball machines, and it is similar work. He volunteereed to help me pick out The caps. I don't know if there is an Easy. Source to get all The caps in one shot.
I am interested to see what we hear on this. On The other Hand, soldering out/in 10 to 15 caps is one thing, but troubleshooting if it needs more work could require some in depth Research.

Got my stash of parts home, and started on the starter, but ran across the first problem. Tried to call Jason at AER yesterday, but that guy doesn't work on thanksgiving! Thought I would ask here since packard info never sleeps. Will try and call Jason next week I guess.
here is a pic of my old and new field coils. I'm converting the starter from 6 to 12V, so that could be the difference, but the old field coils have two lines that attach to the brushes, and the new field coil only has one. I guess I can wire both brushes to this one post, but then I will have to run a pretty thick wire from one brush to the other....Anybody have experience with this? wire gauge suggestions? On the end cap, 2 brushes go to ground, and 2 go to the positive/field coils...
My starter was also missing the 'fish paper' between the coils and magnets. Guess I will cut my own from gasket paper. And should I grease the bushings that are pressed into the housing with say, wheel bearing grease, or something else?

Here it is, all finished. I decided to go with the carib theme for the final touches on my Clipper. Haha, I must Dream on here. Was at my cousin's Wedding this weekend, and my uncle drove all the bridesmaids in his car. This Packard is 39 years in his posession. Wow. This is where I get my "car genes"
Got my suitcase loaded with small parts to take back to Munich.
