I have looked, but is there a picture under the hood of the engine compartment with all the switches, gadgets, and main parts labeled so you can tell what is what in the engine compartment? It would be very helpful for us non mechanics.

I just had my fuel pump and carb rebuilt for my 1948 2262 sedan. My mechanic insisted on using black rubber hose to prevent vapor lock. Fuel pump was not working when purchased so I have an electric pump with a large filter between it and the fuel tank and a filter between old pump and carb. Fuel is filtered twice before going to carb. There was lots of rust in both units although tank had been cleaned and coated several years ago. I am now using ethanol free gas only. Car is all original except modern fuel filters and rubber hosing. I drove 200 miles in 95 degree heat with no problems. 70mph on the interstate and everybody passed me by.

I have 1948,2262. After much research, I use regular alcohol free. I also add a lead additive. I purchased special oil for classic cars. I go out of my way to get the alcohol free.I am having the fuel pump and the carb rebuilt so I guess I could run the gas with alcohol after that. Good luck with your purchase.

All of the above replies are correct, but the main thing is to look at the Model Plate under the hood and get the exact model number. As a recent purchaser, I looked all over the net comparing my car price to others in the same ,better or worse condition to arrive at a fair price.I also flew 2500 miles to see the car. Although my car was a driver and in great condition, a lot of little things that did need fixing and things we found that needed attention really add up to a lot of dollars. I want my car to be a dependable driver, If I want to drive 100 miles to a parade or show or relatives house. I have spent over three thousand in parts and repairs and I am still not through. We had about 8 family members here Sunday for dinner and they all wanted to ride in the Packard. That took about 3 hours, but we had a lot of fun out riding. Good luck with your possible purchase.

Howard,Owen, Ernie, thank for your help. I guess I need to start a new subject since I bought the car. Thank God it wasn't the overdrive problem. My mechanic had adjusted the parking brake since it wasn't holding the car. I suspected the parking brake had seized up and was holding the car and I was correct. I got him out to the house and he was able to free it by banging something with a hammer under the car. Now, about the radiator.I still think the car is running to hot, especially around town at 25 to 30 mph. It went to the radiator shop and they said it was clean and didn't need anything done to it and it should cool the engine. No charge.I don't know how they determined it was running 30 gal a minute. Before I touch anything else, what about the vacuum advance I have read about affecting engine cooling. Will it work correctly if the fuel pump has been disconnected. Can you tell me in what order I should make repairs so I don't have to back track on something I should have done first ? I am reading here every nite to learn about my car. Mechanic doesn't really want to listen to me so I have found another that is willing to work on the car. He is my independent man I use for my two Volvoes and he is familiar with "old" cars.
wish me luck.-

Thank you for that advice. I had read that before here as I study the Forums. We have discovered 2 leaks. Shop is going to clean the under body of grease and grime so they can see where oil leaks are coming from. Brakes were in great shape. Radiator was good also, 30 gals per minute flow rate.Is that ok?? Fluid changes to follow. Then maybe she is ready for the road. Fred in Naples, I admire your convertible. Thanks for all the comments. Fred in Marianna, Florida

Somewhere in my many hours studying Packards I.ve seen a lighted dash keyboard like you describe. I will have to keep my flash light handy. My Packard is currently having the radiator cleaned, new hoses and fan belt. Next we are checking the brake system thoroughly and buffing of the original paint, Agate Blue metallic.

thank.s for your input. I bought the 2262 1948. It took about 2 weeks to get transport completed. You mentioned reading the gauges at night. They light up pretty good, but those dash buttons are unreadable at night. I had to get my flashlight out to read them. i guess Packard wanted drivers to memorize them. You mentioned a light kit was added above them so they could be read. Is that still possible?
Any help would be appreciated. thanks again.

Bad Gas in Tank

FREDERICK E WILEY
Well I got my Packard. Its a 1948 Deluxe. Fuel regulator was leaking, I replaced it and both parts stores I went to said the gas was bad. There is only a small amount in the tank so I wanted to fill it with ethanol free gas with added stabilizer. What do you all think????? This car is in original condition, only 15,ooo original miles. It came out of an estate and only had 9400 miles on it . Previous 2 owners have put the rest of the miles on it in the last 10 years. A power fuel pump has temporarily replaced the original. Everything works except electomatic clutch. The original interior would rate a good to excellent. Thanks for any suggestions.

Any suggestions on a carrier to move a auto from Oregon to Florida. All I see are horror stories about "brokers". Some brokers pretend to be actual carriers but are not. I have spent a lot of time looking on the internet but I hope I can get a recommendation from someone here. thanks
