If i can make EFI fit on my 37....this is doable too.

This looks like a similar bolt pattern but not sure and it's a big investment to find out.

It's for a Carter BBD and not the WGD which is on the car currently. This would be a great upgrade if it would fit.

if they weren't upgrades and improvements, the entire automotive industry would still be building them like back then...but they don't...because they are improvements.

dependable...yes....reliable...mostly...simple...very.

not to say "properly" rebuilt and maintained isn't going to get you several years of service.....but the things you list are def improvements.

for the life of me i can't figure out why nascar and F1 doesn't use drum brakes and 6volt and mechanical fuel pumps.....all kinds of different perspectives here.

def not harping....there is a big appreciation for an all original car in my eyes....but my 37 has seen a MASSIVE improvement since i rewired....have an alternator....12v....EFI....led bulbs....etc etc. but hey...i'm still running points ignition...so I def agree with you and disagree at the same time. Would i try an ignition system that would be controlled by my new EFI unit...yup...but i like the points too.

I wonder if anyone said seatbelts and airbags were not improvements too. They probably did....but they are.

to your point...yeah its not what Packard built it as....but just as there is a place in Pebble Beach for an all original....there is a place for my car as well in this world. and i can see your point cause i hate it when i see a Packard with a Chevy v8....

This is obviously just my own opinion but I am not sure why people think that converting to 12v, adding electric fuel pumps, putting in disc brakes and an entire myriad of other things are improvements or upgrades! These cars were dependable for 60+ years as they were deigned and engineered so the best improvements are to properly rebuild what’s there.

That said, some things are fun to contemplate such as valve body injection but are they improvements? I don’t think so especially as they make the car into something other than a Packard.

alittle bit of an update.

I had an issue where the car would want to die and ramp up really lean when I would throw the clutch in and come to a stop. it would go up to 18:1 - 20:1 and sometimes not recover. this was an easy fix with adjusting the throttle blades at idle, which also helped with my WOT percentage. I am now getting 95% throttle blade opening when flooring it. car idles at 750 and i adjusted the AFR to 13.2 from 13.5. Now when i come to a stop it will go to 14.5-15ish and recover perfectly.

I have some more fine tuning to do with the inital amount of fuel it squirts when you first start the car. gotta find that sweet spot so i can get it to fire off a bit faster without cranking too much. and i might add a bit more timing in it to see how it handles.

but overall, its just still WAY better then i ever imagined. Gas gauge finally moved down to 3/4 tank so i know the sender is working... wont know how accurate until i run out of gas and see where the needle is, but hopefully i got it pretty close...my concern is the pickup tube and where it lays inside the tank since i made it by hand.

I'll post a new video soon and one of it driving. I'll also post a pic of the temp of the adaptor when the car is running at and warmed up. i can put my hand on it and its cold to the touch.....Intake air temps hold at 104, but i bet they cool when it hits that adaptor....kinda like a single plane intake or carb spacer. really nice.

its been 107 in my shop lately....and the car idles at 189 degrees. that AFR really is helping the temps and maybe i can dial in that timing a bit more now as well.

since the computer on the EFI unit tells me much more about the car now...i noticed how much the incandescent bulbs were taxing the system (not to say it couldn't handle it) but i went to all LEDs and it barely dips the volts now (like 0.2 volts) and they are WAY brighter!

One thing I did just learn…. Thanks Flack….The throw out bearing is not the same as 37 incase you need a new one. The output shaft cover in the 36 trans is thicker then 37.

Yeah I didn’t even know what rpm this thing was doing before because I had no tach. I can actually go higher…. I’ll get a pic next time for proof. But it does scream for sure…especially with the 4.56 gears. But it takes every bit of it. Guess I rebuilt it pretty damn good.

Also IIRC… I can set the throttle plates open a bit and set that as 0 on the tps… it will adjust idle…. And I’ll gain more tps range beyond 70%. All in good time…lots of settings I can play with.

Gas gauge should be here today… will be nice to have an accurate reading of that for once as well.

4250 RPM? Wow, that must be flyin'!
What kind of AFR numbers are you seeing at some normal operating points. Idle, cruise, wot?

I’ve hit 85 in her before…the 70% throttle is holding me back honestly…the efi just has a larger swing to go full open then the carb and thus the gas pedal as well….But really no need to go that fast in this type of car. It’s not a hot rod…3500rpm is 65mph. Plenty. If this was a coupe and I threw in the 4.23 gears I got sitting in the loft…. 100mph easy.

It always tries for 13.5 afr…. But it will go up or down if I floor it or let off when cruising. I see between 12 and 15 depending on what I’m doing…. But honestly at cruise it’s 13-13.5 on the dot. The fuel trim tries hard for 13.5. Idle stays at 700 rpm (or what I set it to in the software) and 13.5 afr. I’ll make some notes next time… I was just so giddy driving tonight I didn’t record it.

Should be a lot less fouling of plugs too. Not been an issue for me… but keeping that median afr helps.

Also to note… the efi is still learning and there are so many things I can adjust in the hand held unit. But initial run has been so spot on…. How can it get better?

I did reset the tripometer… so we will see what gas mileage I get… which will take forever cause I don’t drive it often.

Now I want one, despite my carb working perfectly...

My carb was pretty decent.. just would buck if giving it quick gas sometimes… and when I went to Las Vegas and tried to drive the strip… it was not jetted right and didn’t want to run. The efi is just pure linear power. Smooth…. No gasp when you give it quick pedal and just more power honestly…. I have more passing power in 3rd as well. It’s night and day.

Nothing against carbs… they got us to where we are now… but this efi is just the bees knees.

Got it all squared away. Today was the maiden voyage of the first efi 37 Packard. All I can say is O….M….G….. this car has NEVER had this kinda power or pickup and go!!! My butt dyno says I gained 20hp.

Took the family for a ride and even they were blown away. It never bucked… never stalled… it just ran…

I regret nothing.. goodbye carb. Not even a need for a choke now. It just starts.

Only thing I need to figure out… and it’s not that big of a deal…. But the gas pedal only has enough travel to open the throttle body 70%. But honestly… it’s plenty of power as is…. And the wife clocked me at 75mph with the gps. Hit 4250 rpm. Temps… 192.

Mic drop.

my EFI tank came for my Dart last week and in the box was the universal sending unit. it is Ohmed for Mopar. 75-10ohm. but that just means i need a gauge for that setup. no worries there. I will get an aftermarket gauge.

I tested my original sending unit and it was fine...so either my "runtz" blew or the gauge is dead because i left the key on and it got too much voltage too long. either way....it wasn't accurate anyways. so i'll mount a new one under the dash.

if anyone was wondering....the newer senders will fit the top of the tank. same bolt pattern. i just drilled a hole in it and made my own pickup tube. i would have made my own return line, but not enough room and honestly...it BARELY fits back in the tank as it is in the pic. but it works.

also....getting that return line fitting on and tight was a PITA!!! damn fat, grown man hands!!!

i temporarily setup the wiring for the efi so i could test it and well....we have our first 1937 Packard 120 282 running EFI.

the car has NEVER ran this well....EVER....again.....EVER and the coolant temps were much much better. probably because its running at the right A/F level now. I was also better able to adjust idle rpm and several other parameters.

obviously it is not setup fully and it has learning to do...but it runs and runs VERY VERY well.

the intake adaptor i made...was cold to the touch...and i mean literally cold. there was sweat on the aluminum riser. vapor lock will NOT be an issue now. and just from it running in the garage...i can tell its making better power too. can't wait to drive it.

here is a video of it running. me blipping the throttle like that was to show it does not bog like the carb did. it literally just goes. the clicking noise you hear is not the lifters...its the injectors in the fuel rail. you can't hear it when the breather is on, nor in the driver's seat.
