Re: Engine colors for 1956 Senior

Buy the engine judging guide from PI. It describes what everything under the hood should be painted and/finished in. The problem with pictures is that you are assuming that person painted their engine correctly!

It's a 56 Stude Hawk. The gentleman asked me if it was ok, and I said of course since it's a Packard drivetrain. A Packard in Stude Clothing! Which means all the 1956 Service information on the website here applies to him.

Yeah I agree. I am not sure that reversing the axels will lead to a longer life. I would think that the opposite is more likely!

Re: 54 Packard - Removing the Thermostat Housing Bolts

I agree with Randy. An impact gun is great for removing stuck fasteners without snapping them. A torque wrench is not needed for removing fasteners, only tightening them to recommend specs.

WD is just about worthless as a penetrator. Buy some PB Blaster, hit the area with a wire brush to remove any paint or rust scale, and then soak with PB Blaster. Give it a day to soak in really good, and then a coupe of hits with an Impact gun should break it loose without snapping it.

The hammering action of the Impact sends the force down the length of the bolt helping to break it free. As opposed to just a socket wrench that will simply twist the head off of a stuck bolt.

Luckily the thermostat bolts should be very easy to drill out.

Happy Veterans Day to all the Veterans out there.

Someone sent this to me in an email. If you are ever wondering how effective out troops and technology are here is a video montage that was put together as a propaganda film that every insurgent should have to watch before deciding to join up. Technology is scary! (Graphic Content Warning!)

Just added another 35 vintage adverts to the Photo Gallery. There are some interesting pieces in there. Included a Dealer Ad from the Auckland Packard Dealer, and a 4 page 1939 Spanish Packard Advert Section.

Looking good!

I still need to replace all those same lines.....but with the body on the frame.

You should have seen how difficult it was to replace the Tranny lines with everything in the car!

Funny those trunk lid bumpers are not listed in their catalog. Those were are used on the '54 Clippers. Possible other models also.

I dont have it in front of me, but I thought Kanter had a "Misc Rubber Parts Set" that was a set of all the small odd-ball rubber pieces found on the car. I wonder if they are part of that set.

Re: Steering play and a hot under dash light bulb unit

I agree with Dave (Owen) on the steering. There are lots of things that can cause play in the steering. Basically is the front end is off the ground, you should see the front wheels move as soon at the steering wheel turns.

If someone holds the steering wheel firm, and you can can move the front wheels then you may have play in the steering linkage/suspension/box etc. You should not be able to turn the steering wheel without the front wheels moving and vice versa.

Make sure the steering box has fluid in it. Also there is an adjustment on the top of the steering box which can be used to take up any play in the steering box gearing. Download the service manual for more information.
