Should be clean as it was rebuilt several years back.

Thanks for the info. The tranny has been rebuilt, so I'm wondering if it's the type of fluid or execess heat build up.

Ultramatic Transmission External Trans. Fluid Cooler - 1956

Greetings All,

Has anyone considered installing an external transmission fluid cooler to reduce the fluid temp? I took the '56 for a tour this weekend and the fluid got very hot and darkened and my average speed was around 55. Caused it to start slipping as was shifing.

Thoughts/Suggestions?

Thanks
Gene

As the electronic IVR I bought was plastic, it had a ground wire on it to attach to the car instead of the original grounding through the metal case. I couldn't tell from the diagram if there was any other grounding needed other than what is in place from gauge to gauge.

Would the gauges running on 12v for a long time not be able to readjust for the 5v?

Thanks
Gene

Have not tried that. Which wire would I be grounding as the gauges ground to the dash?

Hi,

I bought the electronic one from the guy in Kansas and I finally got 5v to the instruments. Problem is now with the lower voltage, none of them read anything. Is this repairable or are new/rebuilt gauges the only fix?

Thanks
Gene

Thanks, given its proximity to the IVR, does it regulate the voltage going into the IVR so it is a constant voltage rather than variable?

The new NAPA one I got had voltage that fluctuated from 0-2 volts when I hooked it up to a 12v line. The old one had 12v going in and 12v going out, so all the instruments were reading very high. The gas gauge never moved from the middle and the temp gauge pegged on H when I started the car. Oil gauge was erratic as well, sometimes 0 and others pegged.

Thanks

Kevin,

When I looked in the Service Manual on Page 6, Accessories, it shows the capacitor, not condenser as I had mentioned, attached to the Ign side of the IVR. I'll take it off and test it with a lead directly from the battery and see what I get for a reading.

Thanks
Gene
