Re: 47 Overdrive

What size wrench for the Overdrive Governor and can the Overdrive Governor be removed while the Overdrive is under the car? Or would I have to drop the transmission to remove it?
Also I though that someone had posted some pictures of taking an Overdrive Governor apart and cleaning it up, or was I mistaken? If so does anyone know where?
Thanks for the help.
Wes

Make sure you have a good battery and cables. Just because you have spark doesn't mean you have enough juice in the battery while cranking to have enough power to fire over the engine.

I'm wondering if this might be my problem (see picture below) from the Borg Warner Overdrive Manual, since it doesn't look like the Overdrive ever worked before I got the car. Also I read something in the 49 Service Counselors (23-4) about problems with the shift arms.

Hi Howard, I just installed the relay like in the old drawings, just changed the pin numbers, the light was added in parallel with the Overdrive Solenoid. And as far as the Lockout Switch I just put a toggle switch in to make sure I could disengage the circuit inside the car. It appears the Overdrive Solenoid is engaging and disengaging as power is applied and removed in the circuit.
Thanks for the help.

Update installed wiring, bought a relay (TE CONNECTIVITY / POTTER & BRUMFIELD RELAY, AUTOMOTIVE, SPDT, 14VDC, 40A) and wired it in. Still no cable, but added a toggle switch to act as the cable switch. And also wired in a light to let me know when the Overdrive was being powered. So I pulled and wired the Overdrive arm all the way back. Which would be the position with the knob pushed all the way in if I had it. And the first thing I found is that I don't have Reverse, is this normal?
Next took it out on the road and above 35 MPH my green light would come ON. I would let up on the gas pedal and push back down and it was like shifting into another gear. No longer was the engine screaming at 45 MPH as I got her up to 50 MPH's. Next I started slowing down and noticed that my light would go out about 25 MPH.
So that all seems to working. Now my question is my overdrive broken or do I have to get my cable fixed and installed to have Reverse?
Thanks!
Wes

Owen, good point that's why I reference my 47 which is a two brush system, but I did find this athttp://www.yesterdaystractors.com/articles/artint4.htm
The purpose of the 3rd brush is to control the generators output. This is done by grounding the 3rd brush and field coil. It is directly grounded when full charge is required and uses a resistor to ground for a lower charge.
But I would also like to hear from Jason's because I only know what I read and try myself.

Hi Ken,
Did you get your problem with the charging system fixed? If not on the 47 Packards if you jumper the Field wire to Ground and the Amp Meter displays Maxium reading then it's the Voltage Regulator, but don't hold it there very long. Or better yet just buy a Voltage Regulator and if it doesn't fix the problem you will have a spare for later, because they do go bad.

My 47 had a similar problem showing no discharge at idle, but after turning on the lights showing a discharge, all while the engine was running. I replaced the voltage regulator and its working like a champ now.

Thanks Jason, but I've already got one. Yes, I went with a 35 amp. I see no need to go higher then that. Maybe if I had a Fire Engine as this generator was designed for then it would be a different story.
Thanks again!
