The engine pictured above in the boat is NOT an 1M-357, it's an 1M-356. The 1M-357 is the 3-3/8 bore version of the 384 engine and was produced from 1923 thru 1931. A major difference between the marine and automotive versions of the 357/384/320 engine is the placement of the distributor - in the cars it was mounted on the top of the cylinder head but for the marine conversion to allow reduced overhead it was mounted and driven of the front gear drive. Another easy way to tell they 357 from the 356 is that the 357, just as the automotive versions of it, has an external water jacket plate. About 200 1M-357 engines were produced. The 1M-356 engine was in production from 1947 thru 1951, about 1525 made. Lots of details in Robert Neal's book on Packard Marine and Industrial engines.

Here's a picture of a 1M-268, the smaller cousin of the 1M-357. Note that the final drive is off the front end where the timing chain cover is and where the fan would have been, whereas with the 1M-356 the final drive is just where you'd expect it, off the flywheel end. Second picture set is a 1M-356 as restored and prior to shipment to the Packard Proving Grounds for display. Note they went to updraft carburetion on the 356 for the same reason that the distributor was relocated on the 357.

Hi

A couple of unfortunate Contours:

A '51 200, which now that it's all apart and quite a mess, you can have for a 'realistic' price:
philadelphia.craigslist.org/cto/4330505701.html

A '54 Clipper, nice solid-looking body but where are the bumpers, grille and tailights....seem if the new owner might need those too:
pittsburgh.craigslist.org/cto/4380374921.html

How abused and messed do so many of these poor Contours end up!

Steve

Going back to post #294 and for those with an interest in the Packard marine engines, I knew I had a couple of photos of the 1M-357 (1923-1931) showing how it differed from the 1M-356 (1947-51). I just found the photos, I hope you find them interesting.

I'm posting this link for curiosity reasons. I love mysteries. Any comments on this being singular car that Packard used to showcase future '53 Caribbean sales? This also makes me wonder how much Packard property was reassigned, re-appropriated, lost, stolen or purchased for pennies on the dollar at the end?
