I had thought of doing it with an external switch but didn't want to mount and decently hide another switch. I had a bad relay and wanted to play so did it all inside the relay can.

Gutted the case and added a modern relay but don't remember why I chose to parallel the relay N.O. contacts with the switch. It seemed the right choice at the time. I think it was to prevent the motor from stopping mid shift in the unlikely event key was turned off before a shift to park was complete. It would work just as well by only opening the green wire terminal once inside the relay enclosure with the switch. Simpler to do too.

You would still have to gut and add a modern relay because there is no way to mount a switch in the can otherwise.
