Right. That bar on the '40 is 1/2-inch diam.

So what about the spare in the trunk? Is there a rod used to secure it?

I have located a set of 1940 160 support rods for the fender mounts dose anyone know if they are the same as 1941 160.if Im reading the parts list correctly it says 1935 to 1941 are all the same number. but my thoughts are that the car design changed a lot in those years.
