packardkelly, another thing to check for smoother shifting is the clutch anti-chatter rod. The rod is secured to the transmission and a cross member with brackets. The rod is adjustable so as to take-out slack. The problem is the rubber bushings wear and go bad over time and with exposure to the elements and oil. I replaced the rubber bushings on my 47 Custom Clipper and the improvement in shifting was remarkable. Plus, the clutch chatter I was getting when backing was all but eliminated. I used shock absorber bushings, but vendors sell correct replacements.

Watch out for the aliens, they will get into your Packard and cause all kinds of problems.
