Owen gives the best explantion. Altho i mite add that HISTORICALLY among all collectibles, not just Packard, the owners of very high end models prefered not to be associated with anything that was lesser models. A kind of "sweep the runts under the rug" mentality. THis phenomenon occurs across all elements of civilization.

Following on Owen, and Ross comments,

After I got my first Packard, a 1955 Patrician running and driving, and very proud of it, I went to my first local Packard meeting. I parked the car, and an man approached and said "that's one of those gd V8's, they were the reason Packard went under".

What is that saying everyone has one, or something like that.

Heck, there are people out there who will tell you that 1903 was the last real Packard.

Several years ago i attended a local cruise in. Some grey haired old fart driving a 51 Cliipper remarked that my 56 Exec was actualy a Studebaker. Going back some 10-14 years ago i can remeber occasional remarks of disdain for any Packard or clipper that is not Sr. (from V8 owners) or anything V8 from pre-55 owners. It often occureed in various Packard discussion groups. That was BEFORE PackardInfo.com existed.

No offense should ever be taken towards such comments but rather only suspicion aroused of veiled agenda.

Always reserve judgment till you meet the person who owns the car, regardless of what he drives. Many folks will surprise you with their knowledge and enthusiasm.
For S&G ask Joel (Packards1) about the fellow who owned a 30's packard and was leaning on Joel's car. Still brings a grin.
