got some work done today. backing plate on....clear rtv used. (aircraft grade rtv that my dad gave me from his old job, can't say where). trust me this stuff can handle anything.

timing chain and gears on. used the ones that came off the car. didn't like the timing chain from kanter. it is wider then the gears are. the morse one that came off the car hugs the gears perfectly. honestly it and the gears show very minimal wear on them.

mounted the intake and exhaust manifolds. copper spray used on the gaskets, says good to 500 degrees. didn't have any high temp rtv...so I used up the rest of the copper gasket spray.

even my kiddo got in on the action. cleaning up the threads for the oil pan bolts.

Awesome! Looking good! Is it going to run before the new year?

I would recommend having a spare set of manifold gaskets. They aren't supposed to have any sealant so the manifolds can float slightly as they undergo thermal expansion and contraction. Hopefully you'll get lucky.

I don't think it will be going before the new year.

I have extra gaskets. But the copper spray soaked into the gaskets I used so it's mostly for looks. We shall see, but I think it will be fine.

The side links on a chain are called "guides". They do not carry any load. Some makes have sprockets of two different widths, the chain "guides" on one sprocket and floats sideways on the other.

The car might be too nice to drive!

the chain that came from Kanter was too wide for the gears and I didn't like it. no offense. the "guides" don't even touch the gears when you center the chain.

my old chain hugs the gears and the "guides" are nice and tight to the gear sides. it didn't look worn out at all and the gears showed very minimal imprinting. if I had no choice, then I would use the chain that came with the kit. plus I didn't want to wait for the crank gear to come in the mail. I'm on vaca and I want to move forward.

I was always taught that if the chain touches itself when laid down then its bad. if it doesn't touch and holds shape then it is good. my old one still holds shape and all the links look really good.

I think this old one will last far longer then I'll be around.

I'll keep the new one around if it really comes to that. at least there is an option to have one vs not driving the car.

its gonna get driven. that was the point of doing this...to make it more reliable. I plan on making the money back with photo shoots, etc etc etc.
