Perhaps you don't have Kanter's latest catalog, here's an excerpt from their 1955/1956 catalog (I don't have the 51-54 catalog and perhaps it hasn't been revised since the tank became available). It's advertised as 52-56; if in doubt, there is always the telephone, call Kanters.

Perhaps I don't, but I have the 48-54 catalog from Sep 2011 that Kanter sent me in December and their new Spring 2014 quarterly. So I'll get on the phone to both places on Monday, their prices are within $10 of each other so if they're really the same things then it comes down to shipping costs.

Thanks for the catalog excerpt for comparison.

Made new seals out of an inner tube and rebuilt my air vent flappers. Managed to reuse the staples without breaking any, so that was good.

I bought a used oil pan and a pan for the Ultramatic, to replace my bashed in ones. I cleaned up the transmission pan and found that it had had a hole welded, and the weld looked a little sketchy on the outside, like maybe it hadn't penetrated fully. Easy to check, I hit it with some dye penetrant spray and let it sit for 15 minutes, then cleaned it off and hit it with developer. All good, no cracks indicated. Now I just need to gently clean up some little dings and give it a coat of paint. So the next question is, what color were the transmissions painted? Engine color (gray) or something else?

I spent about a half hour under the car tonight with a screwdriver, chiseling off the crust from the transmission in prep for removing the engine oil pan, Ultramatic pan, and bellhousing cover. Lo and behold I uncovered that filler thingie that I've heard so much about. Obviously the transmission fluid level hadn't been checked or replenished in a long time, before the car was parked for a longer time. I can't wait to see what the rest of the tranny looks like after some more digging, I've only seen them in pictures so far as this one is so crusted over. I'm hoping all the leakage was engine oil running back, otherwise the tranny will have to come out for all new seals someday sooner rather than later. We'll see how it works first, then worry about the leaks.

I took the steering off the car the other night (pittman arm on down) and so I worked on that assembly a little after work tonight. The bolts all soaked in penetrating oil for a couple days, but even so the impact wrench was the only way those tie rods were coming off. Managed to get the plugs out of the end of the connecting rod, so then I could get all the bits out and remove the pittman etc from the connector. I took a picture of all the parts in order of assembly to remind myself how it all goes when I go back together.

Borrowed a Sawzall and cut the exhaust just behind the muffler, and got the exhaust out of the car. If the muffler isn't too packed with mouse house, then all I'll need to do is get a new tailpipe bent up and figure out new hangers. I haven't looked into the muffler yet, it actually looks kinda new, preserved by lack of use I guess. The whole tailpipe from the muffler back is pretty beat up, like the rest of the underside of the car.

I reassembled the steering, all I need is to get new tie rod ends and it's done.

I started removing the wiring from the car, my new generic harness is here so I can start sorting the wires out and once I get the inner roof and behind the dash cleaned up and primed I can install all of that.

The other thing I used that Sawzall for was to cut out the right rear shock, the top nut was seized on the shaft and I could not get it off any further. So zip, sawed through the shock shaft and then it was just a matter of prying the pieces out from between the bracket and the trunk floor above. Sure beats a hacksaw blade. Seriously, they couldn't leave just a little more room to get in there? I look forward to getting the new grommet, washer and nut in there when I put the new shocks on. Sheesh.

Can someone tell me what size socket I need for the rear axle nut so I can get the rear drums off? I need to buy one and I'd like to avoid buying several to try. Thanks!

Sorry, I don't know the size but I just went to Harbor Freight and bought their large socket set. It came with many sizes, a bar and socket wrench.

Hope this helps.
