AL: Before your mechanic installed the new starter DID HE CHECK THE CONDITION OF THE TEETH ON THE FLYWHEEL RING GEAR?
OR DID HE JUST INSTALL THE NEW STARTER?

The other question that comes to mind if the fuel pump was leaking why would he try to restart the car with out fixing the fuel pump first.

It seems that if your mechanic knows what he is doing then he should be able to figure out what caused the bendix gear to go south.

However it will be interesting to see if any other persons in here have had the same problem in the past with the starter that you are having now.

About the only thing that causes that is either a faulty Gear or the bendix is throwing in too far or too hard against the flywheel.

I would most likely think a faulty gear first.

Eric

The WAY OFF timing thought occured to me also, except before the starter acting up, it ran great and smooth.
With way off timing I would think you would not be able to start easily and if it did start it would run like an asthmatic thrashing machine.

Very true. It's most likely that the starter suffered from improper timing or a bad flywheel in the past, which cracked the bendix, and it decided to show it's ugly head now when you least expected or want it.

The GOOD news is, it didn't do this 1000 miles down the road when you're traveling out of town and leave you stranded somewhere!
