I watched a movie that iluminated the environment of insurance business. In one scene the camera panned to an authorized repair shop and zoomed to a tool from an auto body man. It was a kind of simple board with contrasty stripes on it (pic 1), in use to make hail dents visible (pic 2).

Heavy silence in this thread. I augur from this, that the trick is as old as the hills.
For professional ascertainment of damage the insurer deploys even striped tents.

I think it is pretty cool! Don't know if it is known in the industry or not. I'm afraid to try it on my cars!

Car companies still use this method sometimes to check quality of new tooled Class A surfaces.

First I've heard of this method in my 68 years. Much better than watching white walled tyres reflect in body panels.
Thanks for the info.
Please keep sharing such good ideas.

Charles, Paul, Arthur, thanks.

To follow a stripe allows to spot and accentuate a detail. A non-linear course of the stripes twist the meaning of contour sharpness right around. The below shown photograph of the Packard driven PT-Boat examplifies the reverse effect.
