Nothing can possibly be more difficult than dealing with the California DMV and as a licensed VIN verifier, I have to deal with their constantly changing rules all the time. Often the clerk at the DMV office will tell you something that contradicts what is printed on the form and can't be swayed even when you point out the contradiction.

Having said that, getting an error corrected is not that difficult and may be as easy as filling and signing a statement of facts form or getting a letter from a club along with an application and associated fee for a new title. I would even be happy to send you one on my letterhead stating that the title is in error if you can send me a scan of your title and some photos of the car. I can't do verifications that way but this isn't the same thing so is no problem.
