The usual method of finishing a crankshaft bearing is to use a hand lap while the shaft is rotating in a lathe. In the Packard factory the idea illustrated in this picture was originated to hone to size and to correct out-of-roundness and taper on Packard crankshafts - again to insure and assure your customer's investment. Packard has about $60,000 invested in a sufficient quantity of these machines to keep up with present-day production. Time saved by machine over old hand method approximately 40 minutes per unit. If the source is to be believed, then the photograph was presumably taken in the early 1940?s. It shows a military vehicles in the Netherlands with a Dutch army plate (black on orange). Many vehicles were commandeered from civilians and re-registered in the army series. This Packard could have been one. image and information source:https://blog.europlate.org.uk/quiz-on-early-netherlands-issues/ Looks like it could be a Twelve from the bumper.
