My 2 cents say go for it. Personally, I'm partial to the 57 because to me it was very well done and a nice car under the circumstances it came into being while the 58's were just a bit too much and kinda broke the continuity. You're right that some might raise an eyebrow but so what-it says Packard on it. Very sorry now that I didn't buy a 57 P. a few years ago when the opportunity came by. Am sure you'll be welcome--

After reading this page for a while I will ask a question I know most real [Packard people) due not consider the 57 58 real Packards but I'm thinking of getting one I have a lot of Studebaker knowledge and practical experience dating back to late 1950s.After talking to my brother he mentioned the fact that we have quite a few Studebaker parts to help with a Packard/ Studebaker. This group appears to me to be open minded and caring more about their cars and fellow members than most of the other sites. Helping each other not about image. I like all cars but due seem attracted to orphans such as Studebaker, Packard, Kaiser , Henry J. Oldsmobile, and Amc

I just remebered that in fact i have a MIXTURE of DExron I and Dexron III and Dexron Mercon in the trans over the last 7 or 8 years and 15K miles or more. This is because i had a lot of Original Dexron left over from about the late 70's as well as some more modern Dexron/Mercon.

I sincerly doubt that the Twin-Ultra in my 56 Executive has been been removed nor serviced for anything other than what can be done by removing the oil pan. The car is very original with 36K miles when i got it. 55K miles now. I have the Packard dealer service records and previous owner history on the car.
So i really doubt that there is anything in the trans that would be different from when it left the factory. In any event, i am more suspicous about differences in the MODERN type F vs MODERN Dexron et-al fluids. Quite possibley there is little or no difference in the MODERN fluids, regardless or type, where as there mite have been a LOT of difference 20 years ago or more. I don't know.

Eureka! I have located the newspaper article (1937) detailing the operations of the Packard Canada plant and more or less itemizing the Canadian content. Unfortunately the article was scanned into a Word document and I'm not confident how to post it, so I'm going to email it to our multi-talented webmaster and let him figure out how to post it. I'm sure many of you will enjoy reading it.

My own experiences mirror PackardV8's, but in reverse. Early on I used Dexron/Mercon and quickly developed a high speed clutch groan. After switching to Type F the groan disappeared in about 200 miles and has not returned in 10 years. I have wondered if these different observations are related to the type of lining used on the clutch, whether OEM type or the newer GM type synthetic lining.

The reason I had a tool made to pull on the CAST part was that I saw one damaged when trying to pull against the sheetmetal ring. It also puts undue stress on the rubber. The ring on mine had come loose from the rubber and was rotating against the timing mark which was the reason I had to remove it in the first place. You may not consider it sheetmetal but it is rather thin steel and as I said I saw one damaged by pulling on it. Fortunately my balancer was not cracked, but I exerted
considerable force in removing it. I ran a flap wheel inside it to clean it up before reinstalling it after getting it back from Damper Doc. And I have never seen the Packard tool but it is obvious that they felt it should not be designed to pull on the ring and stress the rubber but pull on the backside of the cast iron.
