Re: Don’s 1937 (120) 138CD Deluxe Touring Limo

More good progress. Yesterday, I started looking into the bit of steering wheel play that I still had….notice I said “had”. Allen had gotten it much better as most of the issue was the steering gear box. I suspect I had a hand in destroying the gears as kid. With car never moving, the whole neighborhood would play gangster in the car and someone was always cranking away on the steering wheel. Years of that could not have been good for it. But, we had fun.

Anyway, I disconnected the pitman arm from the drag link and was able to determine that there was no play from the steering wheel down to the pitman arm. So, I reconnected the pitman arm to the drag link and then noticed that much of the play was now gone. The socket at the drag link just needed tightened a little, not much. I now have very little play in the steering wheel and everything feels very smooth. I will still replace the center crank bearing before too long as I need to replace my coil springs and the lower - inner bushing are pretty rough. I’ll replace the bearing when I do the springs and the bushings.

Today, I decided to tackle the timing chain replacement. I had a nice discovery. The existing chain is “new”. So, that means it is one of the things that must have been done back in 2004. But, it appears the gasket was re-used and the cork seal was not replaced. I’ll replace the gasket and the seal tomorrow. So for the excercise, I learned how to replace the chain, even though I didn’t end up replacing it. I’ll have the cork seal and gasket in good shape. And, I have some piece of mind of knowing that the guy who worked on the car for Dad back in 2004 didn’t take advantage of him and clearly did a bit of work. I still wish Dad had kept some records.

Those are most definitely bumper support irons for a trunk rack equipped vehicle. Either the car had a trunk rack equipment when new, or for whatever reason, speculation ________, the car has them now.

Just looking, the water jacket looks exceptionally clean. The corroded studs and uneven gasket discoloration may indicate some slight gasket seepage, which is not unusual. The carbon deposits look normal. Beyond that, precision measurements would be needed. The valves look pretty good, but slight leakage may or may not be occurring. The # 7 cylinder' exhaust valve may have been running a little hot due to lack of clearance at the tappet or poor seating. I doubt that that engine is cracked, from the look of it, but cracks can be hard to see.

Hello and thanks much for the kind words. The vintage bicycles in my collection of this caliber just are not ones I would ride any more. It is tough enough to get them all together (with the correct parts) and restored– much less to ride them. And with the values where they have risen these days? Suicide to think of riding these vintage bicycles when one can get a rider at Wal-world for less than $100 bucks, with no worries about falling and breaking pieces either of yourself or a precious collectable like one of these!

My set screws for Packard gear. We're loose.. so will have to stake them.

The new adapter that goes on motor. Going to put a roll pin in
And set screws.

1954 Caribbean and 1953 Clipper Deluxe. Just spotted on FB Marketplace. Rough unrestored but Carribean looks doable. Body looks pretty good from what I can see in the photos. Package deal, only $4k for both cars. Ad states Caribbean is a '53 but it is definitely a '54. Wisconsin:

1948 Super Eight Convertible Victoria for sale on EBay

Saw this today and thought it looked interesting. Someone apparently tried to update the appearance of the car with 23rd series side trim and 1952 "bottle openers" on the rear quarters. Car certainly needs a lot of work, but definitely doable. Worst part appears to be the floors, though that is typical with a convertible, particularly a bathtub model.

And also saw this 1941 120 for sale at a NYC area vintage car dealership. Looks like an incredible deal if the car is really as nice as it looks in the photos:
