Hello. In the UK, Rolls-Royce cars were supplied with a 'town cap', a plain screw-on cap in place of the silver lady mascot, the idea being to have the town cap in place when the vehicle was parked, to avoid the mascot being stolen. My 1404 has an elaborate chromed pelican mascot that is attached to the top of the radiator grille by a very simple slot locking device, which takes two seconds to remove. Is there an after market device that I can purchase to put in place of the mascot when the car is left unattended on the public highway please?

thanks all for this info. I can now put this unit back together, at present the bimetallic spring is clean and not corroded but flaps about without connection at either end. Your explanations make its purpose and operation clear. Thank you.

1404 hot spot?

This device is mounted on the exhaust manifold of my 1936 Super Eight. It appears to be incomplete with parts missing, inside the dome there is a piece of what could be bi-metallic strip. It may have been a hot spot operating the twin butterflies inside the exhaust manifold. From the photograph is it possible to tell what it was for? I would be grateful for advice as to whether it should be reinstated or was it superseded and is an obsolete part belonging to a previous model?

Thank you very much. I will pass to my engineer and hope he can find a mark as you suggest. for the king pin he may end up finding a similar bearing here and adapting it.

Hello. Help please. Here in UK my 1404 Club Sedan is undergoing recommissioning and progress so far is good: fluids changed, filter changed, front brake cables renewed, fuel gauge repaired, new tires fitted, steering box adjusted. My engineer is now trying to set the timing but there seem to be no timing marks in any of the expected places, no window on the bell housing, for example. The shop manual does not refer to this. We need to synchronise the two sets of points and time the engine correctly. Does anybody know the procedure to do this please? On another topic, I will need to have the right hand king pin assembly overhauled. Kanter have the pin but not the bearing. Other model years seem to have king pin overhaul kits but not the 14th series. Any suggestions? Many thanks.

I am used to a prewar Rolls-Royce, which just has a strainer so I will clean that in the Packard. Its condition will give an indication of what the disposable filter is like.
Thank your for the offer of the unused set up. I will consider what needs to be done.
