The roller tappet castings are cast iron.
I could paint them Aluminium. I saw an engine picture in Wades Workshop and it was green.

I remember reading that the packard engines had acorn nuts throuhg 1939. I am about to paint the engine but would like to know if this engine originally had Chrome Acorn nuts and washers. The as recieved car had regular nuts. The engine was manufactured mid model year. The engine has probably had several valve jobs over the years (83000 Miles)so the Acorn nuts may well have been replaced

I have Acorn nuts and washers. to be authentic, Should I install them?

1939 Super 8 Engine Paint Advice

I am about to paint the '39 Super 8 engine on my Limo and would like to get it somewhere near correct. Someone painted everything the wrong color probably 40 - 50 years ago. I looked at many pages on Wades Workshop but several of the engines have different color scheems.

Is this correct?

Block --- Green
Crankcase --- Aluminium
Clutch Housing --- Green
Valve cam roller follower castings --- Green
Transmission --- Green (Note the original paint on the transmission is a slightly darker green)
Pan --- Aluminium
Vibration Dampener --- ?????
Oil Cooler ---- ?????
Oil Filter & Cooler Tubes ---- ?????
Vacume tube from intake manifold --- ?????
Fuel/Vacume Pump ---- ?????

I have seen several Packards with the starter end cap painted green, but I don't think it was originally done that way. Should all accessories be black. Gloss or Semi Gloss

Should I paint the aluminium with Aluminium paint or leave it natural?

Hope I get some answers before I do it wrong.

Thanks in Advance
Bill Wurts

We are heating the outside of the hub. The hub extends say an inch and a half from the rivets. The joint is at the key way. Here is a picture with the drum removed and you can get a better visual of the connection.

Pulling the Rear Drums on my 1939 Super 8

What a great resource this Website is. Last week I attempted to pull the rear brake drums on the '39.
I met with no success. A search or the Packadinfo site gave answers on what and how to do it.

First let me address safety issues. MANY MANY thanks to BigKiv, Rusty O'Tool, and Bob1951 for saying "Do not stand in line with the axle as the drum and puller can rocket across the shop floor when it finally decides to give up and come loose" It did just that and having read and obeyed the warning my shins are intact. Next time I will listen to Bob1951 and leave the hub nut on loosely to keep the drum from rocketing across the shop floor.

The industrial strength puller BigKiv recommended from ToolTopiahttps://www.tooltopia.com/ did the trick. Without that tool and your advise I would still be at it.
A little heat, a 2 pound sledge and a total lack of timidness did the trick.

Many thanks

The Heater is missing on my new to me '39 Super 8
There are holes in the firewall where it once lived.

What model number heater was used in '39 and is there any literature on the controls.

See firewall Pix

Well Guys thanks for your help.
Looks like the '39 is on its way to Connecticut.

After it arrives will be a series of posts like Does anyone have a horn rim for the banjo wheel. West Peterson had one a while back.

I will put the car in owners registry after it is here.

Thanks Again

Bill

Packard Progress Report
Well there has been a lot of good advice and comment in the 25 replies from the forum post. I am also tending towards a New York Body Shop or Coach Builder. The reason I say that is the radio has green windows to the left and right of the tuning and volume knobs. From the picture I can just about read "WOR: and "WSJ" and "WNN" printed and these were NY radio stations of the era.
The comments about the difficulty obtaining parts for a '39 Super 8 vs. a '40 is a great concern and thanks for advising about this. But also, Thanks for the comments about seeing this as a very interesting car. I really agree with one comment about liking the "V" windshield vs. the typical Rollson flat windshield.
I have convinced myself that it is not a Rollson, and was convinced of that when I went to look at the car. But one can dream.
To answer a recent post inquiry. I need to make a decision by the end of the week and get into negotiations and buy it or not. I could convince myself that a eventually a "39 Super 8 parts car will also become available at a very reasonable price. If I get the car, I can see that this forum is will be wealth of knowledge.
Any Comments on the radio??? See attached Pix
