New gas tank from Kanter
#11
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

David Childs
Good morning fellow Packard lovers: today I joined that elite groups of Packard guys who order a new gas tank from Kanter and got it installed. It was a welcomed sight to see a new shiny gas tank on my Packard. There were a couple of anomalies that I'd like to hear your comments about to see if you encountered the same thing. First, the vent pipe end sections did not line up with each other. But since each end is for a section of rubber hose this is not big issue. Second, the gas filler tube at the very top is resting on the face of the gas flap body. This might take a bit of refitting since I cannot get the new gas cap on--yet.
This will be my last major restoration step prior to placing ad and to sell my Packard in the coming weeks. I have enjoyed taking my Packard to car meets and excursions of every type for 30 years. Now it will be someone else's turn.

Hi James at Kanter: thanks for the terrific rebuild of my Packard BTV. Thanks also for your generosity. I installed the BTV as I received it, without knowing that the brass fitting at the end of the master cylinder with three ports on it was backwards. I simply removed the brass fitting and turned it around and finished the installation using a pointed awl to keep the middle port in line with the brake fluid path. My pedal travel distance is more than my old BTV, and I am trying to find out if this is the new normal pedal distance feel.

Agreement with all of the brake bleeding comments above. I use just simple tools which includes a clear glass Borden milk jar to catch the old fluid. You need to be sure the end of the hose is below the level of old fluid in the jar or you will get to start over! The other thing is the order of the wheels when bleeding. I just followed the LF-RF-LR-RR and that seems to work. With my just-rebuilt BTV I notice that my brake pedal seems to require a bit more distance for stopping than before. Possible re-bleed the wheels. My old BTV hardly required any pedal distance for contact.

From David Childs in TX: the BTV photos are not working right now in this forum but I think you are talking about my '54 Cavalier BTV, which arrived back home today. I can hardly wait to get the unit back on the Packard so I can drive it without the stress of inactive power brakes. Thanks to Kanter for making this possible. You have helped us keep our Packards running for years.

Thank you John for your input on my BTV. I took your advice and parked the car in the garage until this could be attended to. This morning I signed back into the forum to see what progress had been made on the diagnosis. Good job
Kanter! Thanks for helping us keep our Packards going.

Good news to all of you who replied to this Frigikar topic. Today I reconciled myself to disassemble my 6-volt electric motor and determine what might be wrong. **Prior** to disassembly (last resort)I decided to try and do one more electrical test, this time slightly different than before. This time I hooked aligator clips to make the ground from motor to battery--then holding the motor upright I touched the hot wire to the negative battery post and immediately upon contact the motor started working. I ran it for several short 20 second intervals and the motor still would spin like like a new one. After reinstalling the motor it would not work so I put my hand down into the air outlet and gave the cage a quick hand spin, whereupon it took off running. Now it responded to the a/c off/on switch!! I had thought the motor was just set up from non-use rather than years of regular use. The Packard repair spirits were at my house today!! The drier has been removed for rebuilding in Fort Worth, TX, I need to make one length of aluminum or copper tubing and we are ready to evacuate the system. Thanks to all, more photos to follow as project proceeds.

Troy, thanks for this tip on opening up my Packard electric motor. I will perform all of those steps next week when I get back into my garage. The motor shaft does turn, so it is worth the effort to investigate inside the casing. I believe the motor is stuck due to non-use, rather than long use. **quote from JPinto $300 to rebuild electric motor. **Packard electric motor appears to be the same as the heater blower motor, but I do not have a spare heater motor. The fan cage might be different, but it is the same motor I believe--6 volt. Great Memorial Day to all.

Thanks for sending the information on JPinto rebuilders. I checked locally first and then went to Hemmings Motor News. Two of the Hemmings listings did not rebuild motors despite being referenced as rebuilders. I have sent JPinto an email and two photos of my electric motor. But on the JPinto web page there is an electric motor identical to my motor. We'll see soon. Will report back in and thanks to all the replies.

Frigikar air conditioning in my Packard

I have tackled the after-market air conditioner in my 54 Packard Cavalier. Now that the hydraulic window project is finished, on to the a/c. The evapaorator is in the trunk with the left and right blowers. One of the blower motors does not work. Its not frozen, but it will not work. Does anyone know of an electrical motor repair (6-volt) who can check this motor out. Thanks for all input.

I should have started a new topic on STEERING GEAR REMOVAL, but since we are already going in that discussion I'll just continue here. I did peruse the "suspension and steering" section of the service manual some time back to begin thinking about what should be done to correct my LOST MOTION. The steps to check things out are fairly straightforward, but I did stop reading on p.13, just before the section "Steering Gear Removal." What made me stop is the note above that section: do not attempt to adjust the cross shaft until the steering gear alignment and worm bearing adjustment are known to be correct. All of the paragraphs before this "note" explain how to do this. I will read everyone's input and suggestions until these two things are accomplished. This could not come close to the hydraulic system project.
