OK I finally bit the bullet and removed the speedometer. For the information of others who may not have done this on a 1937 115C, the process involves removing the panel holding the speedometer and is quite simple. First, detach speedo cable at back of unit, and 3 lights clamped to the unit. No longer trusting my memory, I labeled the lighting wires first. If your car has a defroster, it is helpful to remove the defroster tubing from the windshield mounted outlet. The panel itself is secured by six machine screws, all with 5/16" nuts. Two screws are welded to the back of the panel at the top and the others go through the small plates holding the bottom of the panel to the instrument frame. I was expecting to need WD-40 but it turned out all the nuts turned fine. I am attaching photos of both the instrument frame with panel removed and the backside of the panel showing with the speedometer still mounted. Tomorrow I will start contacting repair resources. Thanks everyone for your interest and info.

remove/repair speedometer 1937 115C standard sedan

My speedometer works but the odometer does not. First question: is there a simple fix for the odometer while still mounted? Second question: assuming answer is no to #1, can the unit be removed from the front - does the wood grain panel rock back from the dash once the four machine screws on underside of dash are loosened? Third: repair sources for speedo/odo and, by the way, clock?

Thanks all,
Jake

Thanks Howard. I had pretty much resigned myself to some minor surgery on this item, but if you are right about the stripped or bent gear do you have any recommendations for repair sources?

I took the car out today for the first time in 2 months (we've had a lot of rain) and discovered that while the speedo works fine (hence no problem with the cable), the odometer is not turning over. Any ideas on how to diagnose the problem further?
Thanks,
Jake Powel

This is a question about top material and color. Which modern materials are considered acceptable replacements for the original insert tops on a 1937 115C sedan? Also, did the original tops match the paint color, were they all black or was there some color combination dictated by body paint color? My car is Wilshire Green.

Thanks for any info.

I had my center pin replaced by a frame shop last fall. This was on a 1937 115C (6 cyl). The shop used a torch to cut the rivets fastening the plate on the underside. Then they were able to access the steering and replace the pin without raising the engine. They replaced the fasteners with stainless steel bolts. If you would like a photo of the result, contact me at jake_powel@comcast.net

1937 115C center steering arm R&R

Does anyone know how to remove and replace the pin for the center steering arm? The frame shop where I took the car is scratching their heads and options range from loosening the engine mount to removing the radiator and taking off the fan belt pulley. These seem extreme to me. Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jake Powel
